Hi all,

Looking for a heavyweight rug with detachable neck for winter. I love the horseware rugs as they are great quality & a good fit on my mare. Thinking of ordering a fal pro chieftain (the purple one) as it looks like a good rug for the money. (Around £120) has anyone got one? Any good? I hate leg straps but I'm not sure if these have leg straps or fillet string?if anyone can recommend a good heavy TO with fillet string, detachable neck with 1200 denier that would be muchos helpful!! :)

I would recommend Premier Equine rugs. They have many different weights with detachable necks, fillet string (they also sell a plastic coated one for a couple of quid!) and the majority of the heavier weight ones are 1680D Ballistic. They are great quality and have great customer service.

I've got a Fal Pro I have had for a few years. It is a very robust rug and keeps Himself dry but it gets really heavy when it is wet - I just keep it as a spare TBH.

I have a 40g Fal rug which is great but I would want to handle a HW before buying as mine is heavier than other rugs of the same weight. They're also quite generously cut so fabulous for a chunkier horse but perhaps not so good for a narrower type.

If only I was rich enough to have all my rugs as Fal Pro's! I love them my horse has one of the Viking turnouts and it still looks as good as new 10 years on. I was very lucky as found a second hand rug on ebay which is basically the same as the Fals but made by some random company. Only paid £20 for it and must say worth every penny!

Fal Pro rugs = the best specially the original ones. if you can find a Goliath that is the best of all, better than the newer fals

Next better than the chieftan is Viking

I have Fal rugs, but I find they are very heavy. It also rubbed my mares withers, so I have changed all of mine to Premier Equine rugs and think they are brilliant

Both of mine have had Fal Pro rugs for their heavyweight turnouts. My old girl's one is over 13 years old, my big horse has had hers for 11 years, and both come up looking new every year. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. And neither of the rugs has ripped either over this time - about the only ones of theirs that haven't!

Premier Equine rugs are very good quality, but I don't like the front fastening clips, IMO they are bulky and this sort of clip can attach itself to wire fencing.

I brought the chieftain in both medium and heavy weights this year. I love them, my horse has rubbed his on the fence or hedge and it hasn't ripped just bobbled a little. the fit is perfect for my ISH and doesn't move, slip or rub. First time I have managed to keep a fully clipped horse in just a rug and no chest protector, no rubbed shoulders!
