Im confused about the Chieftain rugs, what weights & neck options do they come in & do you rate them highly? i'd like to have a look at one, cos im wary about purchasing anything unseen & they dont seem to be in stock with a 100 miles radius of us!! thanks in advance!!

I have had 2 rugs from Fal. Both outdoor for my old lad who needs a little extra help. I cant help you specifically with the Chieftain rugs but I can vouch for the quality of the rugs. My first rug lasted about 7 years without having to be waterproofed. I now use it for the cold days that need a little more warmth not necessarily waterproof.

I have just bought him the silver interactive Fal Pro to replace his old rug. Cost me a fortune but figured it was worth it given how long the other one lasted.

I love Fal rugs, they are the toughest best quality rugs on the market and well worth the money. I have a couple of Chieftains and Vikings and they're fantastic.

My boy is wearing the cheiftan as it was £69.99 at mole valley farmers and I needed wormers, which somehow involved buying a rug.....

Anyway thoughts - 350g very warm, like other 400g rugs. Nicely made doesn't move. The only thing that is a big annoying is that the neck rug is quite 'tight' so would garrotte my bigger horse. That said sat well and I am seeing whether his hair grows back on the neck (already rubbed out by a JHL neck cover)

I bought the Fal Pro Commander and is money well spent, in this respect you definitely get what you pay for. Bought the rug, neck and under rug and is now in its 3rd winter, no leaks, no rips, no rubbing and always stays in place! May vary from horse to horse but really suits my TB. If u can afford the initial outlay I dont think u will be disappointed

I have one of mine in one - didn't realise they had been around as long as that kerilli! For £100 for the neck and rug I don't think you can go far wrong. Mine is onto its 4th winter I think now and still is as good as new (350g)and hasn't needed anything. I think they come in 40g 200gm and 350gm. The neck covers come separately in small medium and large so can get one to fit.

They are not quitein the same league as the Vikings or goliaths but then again not much is and they are less than half the price! I am just gutted loveson have taken over the company and the supply has dissappered! If you can find one in the right size just buy it!!

My loan horse came with a Fal-Pro and it's by far the best rug I've ever had - better than Horseware, Mark Todd and all of the others IMO. Would def one myself

It never moves, never leaks and hasn't needed repairing.

I have an 11 year old Viking which still looks brand new & I also have a Chieftan. As far as I am aware the chieftans only came out in 2006/7.

I have been told by at least 3 stockists that they are the value range of fal (bit like Tesco value:))

My horse is 6'3" but the Viking is only a 6' and fits him beautifully, they are very generous.

The Chieftan however is 6'3" and I should have got a 6'6" as it really doesn't fit well at all. The neck is very tight & I have had to get the velcro/elastic lengthened or he honestly would have strangled himself. It's also fairly snug around his shoulders.

The stockists I spoke to all said they are NOT generous and a different cut to all the other FAL rugs & I should have got the 6'6.

That said, so long as you get the right size for you, it is a fantastic rug & has withstood my boy playing with his mates in the field. They all grab hold of each other & try to tug their mate along.

The viking & chieftan are the only two rugs which have NO rips or tears at all.

My friends Amigo, Mark Todd & horsewear rugs are completely wrecked with missing tailflaps & numerous rips in them.

So if you want a tough suit of armour for your horse FAL is the way to go

Possibly not a major concern for everyone but I am a midget and my last horse was a big mare. I found it much easier to rug her up in her Fal, because although warm, it was MUCH lighter than her other HW rugs (one of which tipped me over backwards the first time i tried to rug her up). I am a HUGE fan of Fals, the next TO i buy for my mare will be a Fal.

I too am a midget with a big horse & yes you are quite right, they are very light

i bought the commander when it 1st came out and its still as good as new

i also have a 200grm fal warrior 1/2 neck which is also fantastic.

i would not buy any other make, Fal are costly to buy but last for years.

yes, not a clue what the strategy is as it would appear wrecking the brand is the wayto go! They are certainly not making them in Northumberland any more!

Agree about the sizing, mine wears 6'3 vikings/goliaths but a 6'6 cheiftain, I bought a large neck though so don't have a problem with that!

If anyone sees a Goliath in a 6'3/6'6 please shout!!!

I have a fal silver interactive full neck turn out rug. Had t for 3 years and still really good. I got it for my horse with sweetitch and he always has a nice shiny coat! Would definatey get another one!

I have 3 Chieftan's & they are great i have the 40grm lightweights which are great for my to retired un-clipped boy's.

I did have trouble buying the Chieftan's though i also bought 2 detachable Hoods & that did cause trouble as the Hood zips are not good very difficult to attach.

Fab! Totally recommend them. Bought a medium weight (200g) Chieftan from Mole Valley and keeps him toasty warm. The fit is superb - deep and easy to do up. Also like the fill in the neck, which my Amigo doesn't have. The outer seems v tough, whereas my Amigo has lots of rips and the tail flap fell off after a few weeks! Have just put a liner underneath now it's arctic conditions, but don't think I 'd need to with the heavyweight version. Full marks from me and excellent value!
