FAL turnout filling with water! What to replace with?

I bought my horse a FAL 40g turnout at the start of the winter which has been pretty good so far. It's got several small tears on the outside and he's just torn a small bit of the inside too. It's also a bit too big for him so was thinking of replacing it with one of the same but smaller. However I was shocked yesterday to find that somehow quite a lot of water had got into the rug (horse wasn't wet so it was inbetween the layers not leaking from the wither/back). It has collected at the rear of the rug on both sides and with the rug being a bit big it was hanging right down at the back. I made two small slits at the very bottom rear inside of the rug on both sides and the water gushed out! Was my only option really as I'll have to keep it on him til I get another. He wasn't bothered at all by it!

I'm at a bit of a loss as I don't know of any other 40g - 100g ish rugs which are AT LEAST 1200 dernier and really tough. Really disapointed as I'd heard FAL was a good brand. I still haven't ruled out buying another of the same though TBH... there doesn't seem to be much alternative.

Sounds like the water has got in through the tears. Cant see it being anything else. You could get it repaired and then see if its ok after that.

I'm gonna get it washed/repaired and sell it since it's a bit big anyway.

I'm going to buy either a 1200d Amigo no fill or a 1200d Chillton no fill (from ebay) tonight - anyone recommend which? To use on milder days and to have as a back up.

Will probably buy another 40g FAL in the size down as I can't find a similar alterative. All the 70g (Premier equine) or 100g (weatherbeeta) types are only 600 or 800 dernier. I found a 100g 1200 Ruggles but it's not in stock in 6ft.

Plus an AXIOM 1800d 180g from ebay which I've just spotted, to use when it's very cold/snow.

I find the rambos match up to the Fals. They arent as good for wider horses but I just go a size bigger on the broader ones . I only have rambos and Fals now but tbh I dont think there is much in it. The only thing I prefer about the Fals is the neck fastenings on the detachables or full necks- I think they are safer. I like the high neck rambos best- not the full neck but the ones that go about halfway up as they dont dig in at the base of the neck. I wouldnt bother with the rhinos though! :)

My rug trasher failed to destroy his rambo med weight which was pretty amazing really- his amigo lasted a week, as did most of his rugs lol!

I don't really want to buy a Rambo because they are sooo much more expensive that the FALs. My FAL was £80 on ebay with a detachable neck (which I never actually used!)

I'm considering just rugging him in two no fill 1200D rugs then if the top one is ripped a bit he still has one underneath in tact and waterproof? I've not double rugged since I was a kid though, does anyone still do this? Lol

Not sure which fal you bought tbh. There was a huge range and some were better than others. I have used viking for the past few years but I had one which was the cheaper range and was very disappointed but just cant remember the name. Sold it on ebay!:D (The Viking matched up with the Rambos but was way more expensive).

Why are you going to rug with two no fill rugs? If he has a winter coat then he should be ok with one waterproof rug to keep him dry and mud free.
(I am really old school and never double rug lol! To many straps to get caught up in!:)) Not getting at you BTW just wondering whether you actually need to double rug.:)

The new FALs are rubbish compared to when they used to be made in the UK but it does sound like on this occasion the rain has got in through those tears.

Premier Equine do a 40g high denier turnout rug, not sure about others.

Hi, wondering whether you got the Chillton and how it compared size wize with the Fal, my problem is I know Fals will fit and Axioms and Amigos are too snug, noone seems to know about Chilltons - not even the sellers.

Was it by any chance a Fal Chieftain? if so, I had exactly the same problem. I cut slits to allow it to drain, but have not really used it since, it's hanging up in the tack room.

Strangely enough, I immediately replaced it with a no-fill Chillton. Great rug. Cost half what I paid for the Fal, and is still going strong two years later.

It has been joined by a no fill Shires Tempest. Also great. Funny how the two cheapest rugs I could find on the internet have outperformed the Fal! (I used Bulldogs before, but they were the old style before Fal changed hands).
