My lovely share boy has slipped and fallen in walk onto the road grazing both his knees. Scrambled back to his feet quickly and of course I jumped off and led him home. Hosed his knees and applied masses of sudocrem. He has been sound the whole time. Anything to look out for? Taken the fur off and a tiny trickle of blood but happily grazing.

I'd check for grit in the knees, keep up with the cold hosing for a few days and then slowly build up to getting back in the saddle. I'd also trot him up in a day or two to see if he's twinged anything x

Our youngster did that in the first week of ownership…she left fur and skin on the tarmac 🤢 but she is fine and was fine after a wash and cold hose. I did give Bute for a couple of days to get through the sore bit.

I remember Auslander booting Alf up with every protective item possible…like a teenager going skateboarding..when he went down once during a hack. I always envisaged him in a cap worn backwards….sorry rambling….lol

Hi PP.

I never went on the road with Bailey without his Westropp boots knee/brushing boots on as a precaution.

You can canter and jump in them too (if you go on exciting hacks) and they never slip.

I'd only had Bailey a few weeks and I went out for a hack with a friend who bought a young fellow livery on her pony. We cantered across a field and her pony stopped dead and Bailey couldn't stop in time and it kicked him and caught him on the knee. There was a sickening crack. Luckily the pony was unshod, but nevertheless his foot caused a tear in the boot on the knee pad and Bailey sustained a very small cut on his knee with a tiny spot of blood. I'm am as certain as I can be that he would have broken his leg had he not been wearing them.

They look perfect thank you!

Lol! I had trauma from that one fall for years afterwards, so he never left the yard without knee boots, brushing boots and overreach boots. He never so much as tripped ever again, but I felt like it was tempting fate not to wrap him up!

He had newish brushing boots on the day he fell, and he absolutely ruined them...

I would definitely knee boot from now on, but I would also be questioning the overall management of the horse if you want to keep riding. I would certainly looking into a work up with the vet, a review of shoeing and possibly a maintenance dose of bute. I’m afraid I wouldn’t be comfortable carrying on riding a horse that was clearly struggling.
I have a friend who was paralyzed by a horse tripping. It was just at trot in the arena at home but the way she got projected broke her neck. It’s not something to mess around with

Yes every time I hack. Mine are from Gibsons but Jeffries are really good too though expensive (worth it). Always use them after my gelding took everything off both knees down to the joint capsules but luckily didn’t rupture them.

I used Gibsons knee boots too, half the price of Jeffries and they are well made. Despite some people saying they fall down mine never did and he always cantered in them.
