Does anyone have any experience of a fallen crest.
My friend has just purcahsed a yearling shettie with one and wondered if it is likely to improve and if so, how long that may take and also what may have caused it. I know it's often related to weightloss after being overweight but seeing as this is just a yearling I thought that would be unlikely....

Any ideas?

By fallen crest, do you mean a large crest that flops to one side? If so, then yes, Henry has one. His crest has always been there, as he was cut very late, but in times of porkyness, that's when it stands up proud and goes solid. I can happily say that it is flopped to one side, at the moment. This pic was taken a week ago. When upright, the mane goes down the middle, but flops to the left when he's at a good weight! believe it or not, I'm sat central!

I don't think you'll ever get rid of it - it's as much about neck shape and musculature as it is about fat. I'm guessing that this is also a male shettie?

ETA: What a prat, I forgot to add the pic!

..yes I mean a crest that falls over to one side.

I wonder if there is any reason other than weightloss that would cause it. This little filly isn't even a year old so I can't imagine she's ever been so overweight to cause this...

I don't know in horses, but it often occurs in donkeys after they become overweight, and there is nothing that can be done to get rid of it.

I've seen this in three horses and in all instances it was due to the horse being incredibly thin and in poor condition!

I dont believe it ever goes back to normal but I could be wrong!

I have seen this in 2 ; a shetland who had been incredibly fat and then dramatic weight loss due to lami attack (surprise!), and a Welsh D stallion who had been not overweight but very 'well' and then neglected and left to get like a walking skeleton.
Neither of their necks stood back up even when they got slightly podgy again.
