Falling off for the first time...

I just watched my daughter, in her twenties and a very novice rider, fall off Mollie. She was walking Mollie round a little schooling area and I was giving her some (very!) basic instruction about her position etc.

Then I suggested she should have a go at weaving Mollie between some bollards placed down the centre. Off they set, and all was going well until Mollie accidentally knocked a bollard, startled herself, skipped sideways and unseated Sonia. Somehow she came off the saddle forwards and sideways and gently slid to the floor, landing curled up at Mollie's feet still holding the reins.

Watching your child, at any age, coming off a horse is alarming but it was all at walk and in slow motion. Mollie behaved very well, standing still as Sonia slipped off and waiting while she got up again. Sonia, to her credit, got straight back up again.

We had a laugh later at the instruction I gave her in my panic as I saw her go. "Stay in the saddle!" I called.....

Yeah, right, she hadn't thought of doing that...

Oops!

I had a wobbly moment tonight too; have been asked to sort out a little welsh sec A. Didn't trust the xxw synthetic saddle so rode bareback, and she was a little sod :D Would have been very embarrassing to fall off something so small :o

Oooopsie... glad it was gentle and good Mollie!

She'll be much steadier in the saddle after that :D

Was watching my girls ride this weekend (that I nanny for) and one of them nearly came a cropper-their instructor yelled 'dont fall off'!! Great.... LOL.

Oh good it's not just me then?! :D:D

Nope! I was walking a xc course at a be event a couple of years ago with a friend who was competing. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a horse land after the penultimate jump and peck badly. Automatically I said 'sit up!'

To William Fox Pitt   :o :o

What was worse is his grooms/supporters were standing right next to me!

Mortified doesn't cover it :o :D

When I fell of Ned for the 1st (and 2nd time, same show!) my mum was filming and I was surprised that she kept filming so well after I'd fallen. Even though she only said "Well done for getting back up and not quitting" I could tell it'd really shaken her to actually SEE me fall, even though it wasn't bad.
Just incase you're interested :P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JD1KQSrBYjk

How rude of me! Sorry, I forgot to add: Glad your daughter was alright :) even the littlest falls can be very scary!

Your mum did very well to keep filming. I expect I'd have dropped the camera and run towards her.

Yea! I do tell her every time she films me "I hope we can get something good for You've Been Framed!" the first thing I said when I get out of the ring "DID YOU GET THAT?!" hehe!

Hope your daughter is okay!

My mum refuses to watch me riding, any time she has, I inevitably end up in a heap on the floor.

My last fall was great though, I was jumping my friend's horse, he refused a fence (about 1m I think?) and I went flying, landed at the other side of the jump facing him on my feet.. then crumpled to the floor in a heap, I'd actually landed on the side of my foot and messed up my ankle.

Luckily said friend was filming at the time.. so she had a pretty hilarious video

My parents never came to watch me ride as a kid. My mum came once and the pony refused a jump and I flew over it. I was fine but I looked round and my mum had disappeared

...I thought it was because they didn't care....but it's because they did and couldn't watch

The only time hubby ever saw me ride, I fell off, broke ribs and went blind for a bit

. He's never watched me since....

My boy came off the Arab last year. He thought he could trot

. He learnt he can't. Boys bounce OK though.....

Nice one rhino :D

I'm a terrible one for saying things like "hold on, sit up, don't fall off now" as though that might be remotely useful mid unintended dismout

Glad your daughter's ok. At least you care :D My mother's has only seen me fall off once in the last decade or so. As I recall her response was simply to compliment the stylish roll I achieved and compare it to a stunt move... I would have rather she made an attempt to catch the pony who was trying to make bid for freedom at that point. She could at least have had the camera rolling

On a similar note, my Mum and I used to have semi-private lessons together and the first time that I saw her fall off was one of the hardest things I have had to watch. As daft as it sounds, at the time I remember thinking that I would gladly swap places with her because I was so worried for her - I think I was more shaken up than she was!

I've never really asked her how she feels when she sees me doing an unplanned dismount...but then I've always found most of my falls rather funny and thankfully have never really been seriously hurt (give or take a badly grazed back and a few bruises!)

O god Rhino, I have this compulsion. Any person anywhere that looks like falling I can't help myself shouting 'sit up, shoulders back'. Never quite managed to say it to WFP but many other (much more competent than me) people have had be screeching at them! I also can't help shout 'well sat' when someone manages to sit a sticky situation. I must be so embarrassing to be seen with!

Agree with this! I saw my mother take a fall when I was about 7. The horse spooked at someone's jumper which had fallen off, it shot sideways and the stirrup snapped. I was SO scared but she got right back on.

Also, my mum usually tells me off if I fall off! No sympathy from her! Anyone want to swap? :D

JFTD you seem keen on the mothership, why don't you have her?

smiley overload evening :D

I'm the first in my family to be horsey. Except my Granddad I suppose, who was in the cavalry but died before I was born and didn't ride in civilian life. My parents didn't take much interest in my riding.

So, Sonia wanting to learn is the first time in our family a parent and child have shared the interest. All through Sonia's childhood, I was still so allergic to horses she was never offered the opportunity to ride even though she wanted to. Just horsehair being brought home on her clothing would have been dangerous for me.

So, it's rather amazing going together to the stables and teaching her the little I know or still remember after my 35 year sabbatical from horses.

It's ok, I've just about got over it now. Bloody funny really, of all the people it had to be him! :D

ETA Jess - I've even been known to shout it at people when watching sj/eventing on tv :o

I will never forget MK a few years ago, she was set to come in in first position I think on the xc phase and on the second to last jump (a log) the horse dropped a leg and she took a tumble... mum and I were screaming at the tv, we jumped up on our feet screaming Nooooo!!

Great, I might learn something :D But she'd still be your mother in law so you woudn't escape that way anyway

I remember that, think I did the same! :D

Fiona - I think that's lovely that you can share a love of horses with your daughter. My mum would have loved the ginger boy :(
