Checked Teazle at 10pm, no changes, then went to my new home (the tent) at 11.15pm and she was lying down and making straining noises. So i was like "this is it". Checked her and her vulva had really elongated and very loose. Put her headcollar and tail bandage on and left her.

After about 10 minutes she got up and started eating her hay, typical Teazle

So i checked her every hour until 1am when she was down again making straining noises again. She was down for about half an hour doing this. Then she got up and carried on eating. I carried on checking her until 4am and decided tonight wasn't the night.

Quite dissapointing really as my mum was excited as its her Wedding Anniversary (my dad died when i was 14) and my sister was all excited, but oh well, they do like to keep us on our toes, eh?!

Teazle is now grazing in the paddock without a care in the world

My mum asked can mares have those false contractions or start off with very small contractions?? Anyone know?

The foal determines the day - the mare determines the time. Yes she can stop the birth of her foal to a certain degree; therefore if this groaning that she was doing is not a normal occurrance for her, then I would be watching her closely for the following 24 hours.

I think its amazing how the mare can determine the time. I'm secretly hoping that she was in slow labour and she will be having it sometime today, but a part of me thinks no way will she have it today, but heres hoping.

Shes in the paddock behind the house so we can see her at all times, and i shall keep a close eye on her again tonight. No sleep again

lol.

Hannah had a false alarm (foaling alarm went off too) two days before foaling and we think she was in the first stages of labour from that time onwards. Look for a very sticky glue like stuff coming from her vulva (could be in her tail too as Hannah's was) and this is a sure sign of things starting. It is the cervical plug... Hannah's came out at 6am and then she was induced at 10am.
