For context, horse was moved off spending the majority of his day in long grass to spending 24/7 in a very dry starvation paddock and not being worked. This happened around 3 weeks ago. Since then, he’s developed what looks like a false sole to me. He’s EMS and borderline Cushing (ACTH 27, none of the usual or even less usual symptoms) but has never grown false sole before, even when regularly hacking out on the road.

How concerned about this should I be? Can I put this down to the hard ground, could this possibly be a response to stress (change in field mates), or is this a sign that the metabolic issues have gotten worse?

Have attached a photo of the worst foot (excuse the thrushy looking frog)

It's quite common for a false sole after very wet weather when the sole is soft I find it then falls away once it dries up.

I would consider a low dose of prascend with those results my horse was lower than yours and my vet said to put him on half a tablet, the reason was his coat just didn't shed last summer and this summer it's been much better.

I would definitely speak to your vet about his feet and the cushings, is your horse showing any other symptoms?

Thank you. No other symptoms: his coat’s fine, no lethargy, no uncharacteristic worrying, no excessive weeing or drinking or sweating, etc.

If he isn't working he may not abrade the old sole surface away and then it will build up. It would normally eventually crack out in lumps, and there are some cracks that suggest this might happen here.

Is there any possibility of walking him in hand on a stony surface, if he's happy to do that?

Interesting, thank you. I could try walking him up and down the driveway but I wouldn't be able to do it more than a couple times a week and he's currently refusing to move for anyone else.

Mine was 28 borderline cushings so we did the TRH Stimulation test and the results are suposed to be under 110 and his was over 1,000 so is on one prasend a day and retest in a month.

His only symptom was lathargy.

I've got one who seems to collect false sole the minute we have a prolonged dry spell. Her hooves look too big but it doesn't look like there's anything to take off. Farrier couldn't shift it last year and was telling me of somewhere in the US where they flood the yard the day before the farrier so the feet soften enough to trim.

Mine is metabolic (PSSM & EMS) so I suspect that has something to do with it. Last summer she was rock crunching sound but usually it can make her pretty sore - extra pressure maybe?
