CALLING ALL DUVET USERS

After seeing the overnight forcast for the next few weeks and having a VERY wimpy WB I am going to have to use a duvet for him as an under-rug this year.

How on earth do you secure them in place under a stable rug? I would imagine a surcingle round the belly??

I know with blankets you fold the front in to a triangle over the withers but I can see this happeining with a bloody thick duvet :p

Thankies :D

If you don't want to faff about with duvets - I have a 550g Rambo Jumbo stable rug for sale. I used to use duvets and could never get them to stay right. They used to stay on witht he surcingle, but would slip all over the place and noramlly end up upside down. So gave up and bought this massive rug which is as warm as they come. He lives ot now so have no use for it

Put duvet on lengthways right up to the ears, and put a fleece with no neck on over the top, wrapping the front corners of the duvet across the chest under the fleece. If you don't want your horse covered right up to the neck, then fold the duvet back over the top of the fleece over the withers.

Then put a stable rug over the top. If you don't put a fleece on then it will slip backwards and slide around like crazy!

I just put the duvet all the way up the neck and put a rug ovver it and then a full neck rug over that. Stays fine but my boy must literally not move all night

Ohh posted the same thing at the same time

This is my very complicated to describe rug procedure:
I pull the duvet right up as far up the neck it will go with it still being over her bum, but not as far back as a normal rug goes to allow for some movement backwards in the night.
Then I fold it back to just before the highest point on her withers.
Pop the top rug on so it sits behind the fold of the duvet.
Pull the bottom ends of the duvet around her chest so like as you would do when doing up a rug (hard to describe)lol and then do up the rug ontop and this keeps the duvet wrapped around.
I've never secured them in anyway and they have never slipped round or back before and we always used to use this method at the yard i worked at.

Heres a little pic of Bambee last year...it may make it a bit clearer

Sew wide strips of velcro on to two opposite corners, so they make an 'L' shape in each corner, with the hook side on one and the loops side on another. (hope that makes sense?)

This then becomes the front end, snuggle the naked horse up under the duvet, with the velcro end around the neck, faster so it's like a snug hood. Then put the outer rug on top, secure, and fold back the duvet to withers. Never had one fall off or shift in the night.

Then in the morning, sneak hands under duvet for a warming up - bliss!

eta...so as the above posts, but with velcro...I just took ages responding as was looking for a photo to demonstrate! Hope Lordy is warmer tonight!

Seriously??? if you are putting your hoss in a duvet in the next few weeks what on earth is he going to wear come dec/jan when it is actually cold!

Oh I see- i thought you were meaning that you had seen the weather report and were going to be putting a duvet on him in the next couple of weeks!! Had visions of your hoss looking like michelin man by xmas!

Put a thin cotton summer sheet on first, then the duvet and then normal stable rug - that normally keeps them in place.

Think our duvets will come out once we have clipped!

I have been using duvets for years and I always put them on top of a sheet (summer sheet) or light rug (fleece, thermatex etc) and this stops them from slipping. I throw them on so they nearly touch their ears and make sure the top rug covers the crossed over corners on their chest. Mine are put on length ways and once they have their top rugs on it's lovely and secure and snuggley around their neck. They don't move and one of mine is a complete goon over night. I've found it a fab inexpensive and lightweight way to keep them toasty warm. Would highly recommend for people with older horses lots of heat but no weight. Very hard to explain but hope that comes across ok!

Last year I was shown how to cut a kingsize duvet into the shape of a rug, add a couple of clips to secure the front, and a surcingle to keep in place. So i now have them in 4, 7.5 and 13 tog ratings:D
