So Zoomy has just returned from two weeks playing horseball with her owner. When I picked her up, her friend who is an equine vet was there. Zoom has a vertical line running all the way down her hoof from top to bottom right in the middle. I asked my farrier about it 2 years ago when I got her and he said it was an old sand crack and nothing to worry about.

However, this vet is really worried about it and says it has reached the coronary band and will cause problems. It has been there for two years and, since the farrier wasn't worried, I thought it was a kind of scar. It hasn't got any worse in the two years.

She said that it needs to be fixed by shoes with no toe clips, she said quarter clips and the shoe 'floated'?? I will obviously call my farrier to discuss but she implied that he was a bit rubbish and should have done something since it is serious......and I feel a bit rubbish for not worrying after the farrier said it was ok.

Opinions?

im no farrier but it think its bad when it reaches the coronary band! i have seen a couple of farriers burn a small hole just above the crack to stop it going any further. but this may be for a differnt reason, Thefarrier will help you more if hes online

Pictures please. Pm them to me if you prefer.

I cant help without pictures but often sandcracks are not the end of the world so i would be more inclinded to agree with your farrier although i would agree with the vet that the horse should be in double clips. You say its just a line which means it is an OLD sandcrack that has knitted, this is really nothing to worry about.

Thanks!! I will try and take some photos in the next couple of days and send them over to you. As I said, it hasn't changed in two years and was at the band when I first got her. Just feel a bit rubbish for not worrying about it. My farrier is a great guy and has always done a good job, but it is always good to get a second opinion.
