Hi , I saw your reply to another thread and am hoping you or anyone else can help.
Minnie was diagnosed as anaemic in April this year. She had a bottle of Equisup and I had repeat bloods last Monday which showed her at the lower end of normal.
She has not got a worm burden, she has a worm count every year which shows her as no eggs detected <50epg, and has never had 1 louse let alone enough to cause her to be anaemic.
So what else can cause it ?
Thank you

There are studies now which say it can be heriditory, its seen a lot in more cobbier types of horses. It can also be caused by bacterial infections, and deficiencies in the diet, especially things like Biotin, zinc, vitamin B6 and vitamin E and obviously iron!! So it might be a good idea to look into that. Quite often lack of good fibre can cause it too!!

Hi
This is what surprised me!
Minnie has received the recommended amount of Blue Chip Lami Lite and Blue Chip Dynamic since last November and for years prior to that the rec. amount of Baileys lo cal , mixed with a small quantity of HiFi Lite.
I'm OCD about her fibre intake and again she has plenty of good quality forage, Horsehage high fibre or Wrights haylage . I really thought this diet would ensure her dietary needs are adequately met.
What I didn't know was that anaemia may be hereditory. She's a Belgium Warmblood so is sort of cobby !
I still periodically send an update to her breeder, now may be a good time to have a chat!
Thanks ever so much for your help

Also remember, that aneamia can be a result of illness. So it's possible that if she had a low grade virus that could be the cause.

Pickle is anemic and has had it regularly, until I put him on NAF blood liquid, I have him on it all the time. Vets were shocked as it has meant his blood tests are back to normal

I so wish I could get to the bottom of things

She is a good doer and her coat really shines.
Maybe Min's does have a virus ?
It seems to have been one thing after another for the past couple of years, ever since she had quite a long , stressful journey.
Maybe an immune booster supplement might help too ?
Sorry, I'm thinking out loud here.

I'm planning to have more bloods taken in a couple of months to see where we're at. I'd really like to know what is causing it but maybe I never will get to the bottom of it. I'll keep trying though

It sounds like you've found the answer for Pickle ( I love the name!) Well done and thank you

yeah pickle was initially on equisup, he had a chest infection as well so was on box rest, no one told me how mad equisup can make them! I then tried to lunge him and lost him!!!

I had regular blood tests and tried various things until I found something that worked, I also check his gums regulary a really easy way to look for anemia as they get pale gums.

My 14.1hh Connemara gelding was anaemic, used to give him Viasorbin supplement. Used to have to boost him after hunting and XC as well as he got tired afterwards. I wouldnt worry too much, its manageable. Hope ponio is well xxx

Worm counts do not detect all worms.

For instance encysted emerging small redworm can cause infections and are not detected by a worm count. You need to use a specific wormer for them.

A virus was thought to have caused anaemia in my horse.

I'm on a learning curve today

I used to use Panacur Equine Guard (5d jobby) in February and November to treat that stage of small redworm but swopped to Equest a couple of years ago. I'm presuming they do the same job but please let me know if I'm wrong . CC is welcome

Is there a specific virus that causes anaemia?
I've heard of a really nasty one but no way does she have that !
Thanks ever so much Peter
