You may remember my rather lengthy thread about my horse going footy and the debate I had about putting shoes on him. I did eventually put fronts on whilst I played about with his diet and yesterday they came back off.

He is on a tiny handful of Dengie Good Doer, 1/8 scoop Saracen Re-leve (8% starch) and 50mg micronised linseed per meal. In his PM feed he gets BY, MagOx, Pink Powder and salt. He is happier with his back feet now so presuming that this is making a difference, and yesterday when I took him out he was happy with his front feet as well, although I know that could be because he has just spent 8 weeks with shoes on and may not feel his feet yet!

My question this time is this: his MagOx is running out and I need to decide whether to keep him on MagOx, PP and Salt (BY in the PP) or switch him over to ProHoof. My finances are extremely tight at the moment and by the looks of things the PH is going to work out at roughly £1 a day when you take postage into account, whereas the MagOx was £11 and has lasted over 2 months and PP is 40p a day. Is the PH really worth the extra money, or can I just stick with what I've got?

interesting thought. I have my barefoot TB on magox and think pink (a PP equivalent), never tried the pro hoof, as mare is OK on what we were on. If it were me, I would go with the "if it aint broke...." stance.

The other interesting bit is the blurb for the MagOx:

"Involved in protein synthesis so needed for general growth and repair of tissue, e.g. Hooves.
Required for the maintenance of normal blood circulation within the body, limbs and feet of the horse
Laminitis has been linked with magnesium deficiency
Magnesium is critical for balanced secretion of insulin and glucose uptake
It is involved in regulating blood sugar levels after carbohydrate intake and deficiency is
associated with insulin resistance (symptoms include cresty neck and/or fat deposits)"

As it has been suggested that I keep an eye out for signs of IR as my boy is an exceptionally good doer who is a nightmare to get weight off.

You could try Pro Balance + from Pro Earth? It's similar to pro hoof, but cheaper ;). If you wanted to add more magox you could get calmag from a local agricultural shop - cheap as chips.

I wouldnt waste your money on PP - tis full of binding ingredients, only contains 2 active ingredients which you are cheaper to buy separate and then dont risk irritating your horses gut lining with things like dairy by products and petroleum....
