'What if I find her down' thought came true today. Went to feed the four weanlings and their old nanny. She was down, and going.
Sadly had to wait an age for the vet. Honestly thought she would go before he arrived.
Lovely sunny crisp morning, and she went peacefully. Just pray she wasn't down long, and didn't panic.
One of her foaly friends came and kissed her goodbye before we moved them out, so sweet and gentle. I've only ever known her as a very good nanny, but she was a good broodmare for years.
Fly on old lady, all here will miss you much.

Sad to hear this, it does hurt when the old ones go, we lost our old boy on Monday, and I had the same feelings of wanting the vet there as quick as possible, and not wanting him to be there at the same time iykwim?

Hopefully she's found all her old buddies at rainbow bridge xx

Thank you everyone. We've all toasted to her here. She holds a special place for her owners, as in years gone by Mrs Owner (my boss) rode her in some races, and won her first race on her, when mare was a 2yr. Then at some point, she was shipped to the US, where she came up for sale. Mr Owner, (who didn't know Mrs Owner at the time) tried and failed to buy her. After then being a broodmare for a few years, Mr owner did manage to buy her, and gave her to Mrs Owner as a wedding present. More foals later, and a few years of nannying, today was the end. Bless her. I believe she was 30 yr.

Her foaly companions look a little lost, but they have each other, and will be fine. Already some manners have been ingrained into them thanks to the old girl.
