Tomorrow the vet is coming here to put Wurzel, our amazing JRT, to sleep. We bought Wurzel as a six week old pup fifteen years ago, between putting in an offer on this wreck of a farmhouse, and moving in. She is as much a part of this place as anything, so she will be buried here. Even if we move in years to come, she will remain where she belongs, with a cherry tree to mark the spot. She has always been somewhat independent minded, and after a while we stopped alerting the police and the dog warden every time she decided to spend the night in the surrounding fields chasing rabbits... She would always be sleeping under the car in the morning, usually wearing a shell of mud and an expression somewhere between smug and guilty. Even losing her eyes didn’t slow her down, but the years have eventually done just that. She has had a wonderful life, but now it’s time to do what is best for her. She has had her last summer, and a lovely one at that.

It was our choice to have the vet come out here, but I was somewhat surprised that on top of the huge cost of euthanasia (£50), for a small animal they charge £60 call out! Nearly twice what they charge for a horse. I do feel that vet practices are maybe not encouraging pet owners to do what is kindest for their animal by charging so much.

Every Christmas day, the dogs go for a walk. This was when Morgan was four months old. Click to enlarge.

Oh Sooty

You are doing what is best for Wurzel, she sounds like she was a real character and will thank you for her dignity.

Huge hugs and well done for being so brave. xx

Sooty, This is the worst part about owning an animal, they creep into our hearts and under our skin. You are doing the right thing, and my heart goes out to you, let her go before she really suffers.

As for the home callout fee - disgusting but worth every penny they are in their safe environment.

Big hug

Oh no Sooty, I dont know quite what to say. Darling Wurzel. Things will be a bit quieter without her around.

Hugs to you and to Wurzel from us.

I can't beat what SSM wrote, very true; so sorry for all of you.
Cherish your memories, she sounds a special type of person.

As for the vet thing, that is disgusting in my view; at least ours didn't do that when we had two of ours done a while ago.

Thank you all so much for your lovely comments and support - I cannot tell you how much it means for people to understand. I know she is 'only' a dog, but you have to be an animal lover to know how these furry people you share your home with become members of the family.

As for the vet thing, I think it is shameful, but at least I am going to get the other dog vaccinated at the same time! Thank you all again. xxx

Aww I'm so sorry Sooty. What a sad day it will be, but you know in your heart that you have given her the best life possible.

Reading these sorts of posts always makes my emotional state a bit fragile.....particularly as I will have to go through it again at some point in the not too distant future and it's just one of those things in life that you NEVER forget how you felt.

So sad - sending you strength to enjoy your last day with her.

Well, the deed is done. The vet apparently looked at her job sheet for today and said she didn't want this particular job, but she wasn't going to let anyone else do it either! She has been Wurzel's vet all her (Wurzel's) life, and Wurzel greeted her like the old friend she is. She wasn't going to go without a struggle, and sure enough managed to get the needle out of her leg. She was sleepy by then though, and full of a special breakfast of scrambled egg and tuna followed by a choc chip cookie. Well, she liked it! Mac stroked her and told her she had been a wonderful dog, and she slipped away. Morgan sniffed her, but didn't display any real curiosity. I have had several dogs pts in the past, three of them during Wurzel's lifetime, but none of them has been as hard as this. She is now under her cherry tree, which Troggy predicts will produce furry cherries!

Everyone's kind comments and good wishes have made today so much easier, I showed this thread to Mac too. Thank you all so much. xxx

So sorry to read your post.
I hope that knowing you've acted in Wurzels best interests brings you some consolation - you deserve it to.

Thanks everyone, I feel so daft but there you go - that's the price of being an animal lover! You are all lovely people and I am really really grateful.

Tia - I thought of you when the vet f*cked up getting the syringe in...

Ahh Sooty, I have only come across this post now.

Big hugs to you all, I remember hearing about her and the how she could manage to lead such a full life even when she was blind. She was a very brave little dog.

My thoughts are with you.

Niamhy.

RIP Wurzel xxx

A little late, but i have just read your post. I am sitting here shedding a tear for you... There is no such thing as "only a dog" i'm sure she was as special to you as mine are to me. She sounds like a dear little soul, and is at peace now. You did what was best for her. Bless you both xxxx
