Just received my annual quote for house/buildings/smallholder etc insurance from NFU and it’s gone up £400. Whilst NFU are good and don’t quibble l’m wondering if it’s worth getting quotes from other companies and who would you recommend?

I've had yard insurance with KBIS for 10 years (house is separate). I haven't had any claims so can't comment on that but they have been good, I think it is about 450 for the year including all taxes etc. It includes buildings, tack, machines and liability.

My broker that I have used for ten years says Aviva are no longer doing it so they are looking for other cover. I think last year it was £550
Thanks £550 is rather different to an INCREASE of £400 on an amount already several times more. I would be delighted if it was under £1000 annually.

I’ve just taken out a policy with NFU and it was eye watering. £1600 for house, annexe, 3 acres and stables. Plus a footpath. Without the annex it was around £1200.

I was let down by Greenlands at the last minute, so was in a bit of a rush. It does seem a very comprehensive policy though with higher cover.

Previously Greenlands was around £1100 for the whole lot.

I am just saying what I paid last year. When I took out the policy 10 years ago in was around £350, which covered building, third party, Legal insurance, seven liveries, camping, livestock, products directly sold, employment liability, and machinery. NFU wouldn't even give me a quote.
I am dreading the new quote. I have a busy road and footpath next to me so I need 3rd party and legal insurance.

I'm with Cliverton, its about £500 for stable buildings, tack, equipment, land management machinery, trailers , public liability...I've not claimed so cannot comment on that

I find we are always quoted ridiculous amounts...even NFU admitted theirs was ott. No idea why; perhaps smallholding/small farm insurance pays out a lot round here although I don't see why. It's quiet, rural Welsh hills.

Anyway I have BHS gold for horse third party. The tractor isn't road legal so it's uninsured. Horse trailer insured separately. Stables, shelter, barn, etc fall under curtilage so they are included on the house insurance. Sheep, goats, etc, I work on the premise that my fields are double fenced and surrounded by other farmer's fields so road access is unlikely.

Insurance companies all have such different criteria for what they like to cover it's hard to recommend anyway - everyone will have different experiences.

Greenlands have just let me down too!
I couldn’t find a smallholder insurer that did sufficient equestrian cover, so I’ve had to go to livery yard cover and just take the risk on the buildings myself.

4 horses. PL for all 4. CCC for the 2 liveries. Plus the killer is employers liability - I literally use a freelancer for prob a max of 20h a year. But apparently by law that counts and I need EL.
£580/annum for tiny set up, that was via Harry Hall. Some of the bigger names coming out over £800
