Farmer's dog awareness day

A great idea but probably preaching to the choir & the irresponsible ***** will carry on as they are.

A friend came over today with her dog for a dog walk and she was telling me about her next door neighbours 2 Labs who continually walk in her fields with dogs off lead. My friend rents out her fields to a local farmer who has sheep with lambs running in them, they have told the neighbours on numerous occasions that the farmer is well within his rights to shoot them because although the dogs are not chasing the sheep they scatter before them. The neighbours are not taking this on board and its only a matter of time before the farmer catches them in the act, unfortunately its the dogs that pay the price for stupid owners who will not be educated.

Whilst I think this Cornish farmer is to be applauded as S4sugar said he will be preaching to people who already comply.

I think its a lovely idea...but like the others he is preaching to the converted and will miss his target audience.

Lots of signs alerting to the fact that off lead dogs worrying animals will be shot and a few follow throughs including compensation for the damage done would solve his issue a lot quicker...and would save more lives than it would lose. You would be amazed at how fast people will spread the word about a trigger happy farmer...

Why is the life of a lamb or other farm animal worth less than a dog who is causing deaths? If I had a several young animals being lost every year I would protect the defenseless creatures not pander to the trespassers(as they are not using a footpath etc they are trespassing) and their pets. I feel very sorry for the dogs involved as its not their fault, they are just having fun....but I feel sorrier for the flight animals they are terrifying and maiming.

Its a very harsh view but having dealt with the aftermaths of sheep attacks and put down both sheep and to many dogs for this issue I do think the hard line needs to be taken in these cases....prevention is the cure....but getting the prevention message out there is difficult .....and genuine threats of death can be surprisingly effective shockingly.

Many people do not know that farmers can and do shot dogs roaming....I frequently have to break it to clients with freeroaming dogs.

I think his farm shop business is a factor in why he isn't leashing off shots left right and centre!!

Like you, I am also shocked at the number of people who don't realise farmers are within their rights to shoot a dog in certain circumstances.
