I went to get a bag of barley from my local farmer a few days ago, he asked if i would like a wheat barley mix? I said to him im ok with barley and i didnt think horses should have wheat, he said all his horses have wheat daily, i still said no thank you.

He then went on to say about all the things he uses on his horses; Oil engine oil on the legs ( i thought it was carcinogenic), limestone on cuts!, he give them the dust from his coal to prevent worms? and also wood ash! and to treat a cough a big blob of mustard at the back of the throat!

Im not going to try any of these he said, but was wondering if anyone else has heard of them?

I use savoy cabbage leafs on knocked knees and things but never heard of the above.

I know mustard used to be used to treat people with chest complaints - not used it for horses though!
I also seem to remember an old farmer using engine oil in heavy horses feathers to help prevent them getting scabby legs but I think we used to use baby oil instead.

Old wives tales all of them, and yes, I have heard of them all. Anyone who tries any of them is nuts.
