We live in N.Devon and my mare is having her shoes taken off to day ready for a 2 weeks hydrtherepy from friday the farria is charging £20 cash today just to remove her shoes or £20 plus vat if he invoices me surly this is a lot as he is there anyway shoeing others and he is just pulling them off and fileing around her feet............... on a normal basis they r £70 for a new set with road nails my other farria had a heart attack so had to reduce numbers but he was ony £46 for a new set..

Ultimately, he is doing work to your horse so he is entitled to charge for it. If he is taking off all 4 shoes then thats £5 per foot, bearing in mind he'll also have to rasp the edges once he takes them off I don't think it's unreasonable. Farriers are expensive unfortunately - you might just need to look for another one.

No im quite happy with him he is lovely and comes out at short notice but just wondered what peoples thoughts were on farrias prices today or if mine was more exoensive than most !!!!!!!!!!!!!

We pay £23 to just trim four hooves, which works out at over £5 a hoof, not including removal of shoes, and I don't think our farrier is exceptionally expensive at that.

My farrier charges £20.00 trim and £5 call out which is normally shared. My horses complete set of shoes with road pins are now £62. Was paying £50 when I first had him 4 years ago. Quite a few farriers around here have gone VAT reg which again puts the price up. Unfortunately with fuel prices rocketing it will hit us in every area as another horsey friend has said her farriers charges have gone up simply because of the fuel hike!

Just paid £62 this morning for new shoes. Seems you have a good deal - a good farrier is priceless - "no foot no horse" etc.

I pay £53 for a set of 4 shoes with road studs. And he charges £5 a foot to remove shoes. My mare now has no back shoes and he charges £30 for front shoes and trimming her back feet.

Sounds more than reasonable. Mine charges £15 for a trim with no shoes on, although has been seeing my mare and foal every 2 weeks ish, and has been charging me £20 to do both.

Oh and its spelt 'farrier'

mine charges £50 - 55 full set,

£35 half set and backs trimmed (which i have now..... 3 horses way too expensive to keep fully shod and they do fine on that

)

£20 trim for pony.

Although my farrier only charges £10 per trim (we have 5 done at once, plus a shoeing) I think that from what I have heard, that is reasonable.

Sounds about right to me, though if prices keep going up I will be taking off my horses shoes - and she will have to cope!
At the moment i pay £45 for a full set, and my max i will pay is £50 for a full set so it looks like she will be barefoot sooner rather than later!

I pay £50 for a full set of shoes and £15 for a trim. This seems quite reasonable compared to others but I'm expecting the prices going up due to the cost of diesel.
I have two to shoe and one to trim but I think my oldster is going to have to go bareboot soon if he can cope with it.

My old farrier charged £20 for a trim and £66 for a full set with 1 stud hole each shoe and road nails.

It was more expensive for a full set when I lived in Bristol 3 years ago. I was paying over £70 for a set with stud holes and road nails.

But my new farrier although charges £20 for a trim only charges £55 for a full set and doesn't charge extra for stud holes or road nails, he also replaces any shoes FOC and he came out twice last time to replace nails that had fallen out after about 4 weeks (My chap has got crap feet!)

There is a farrier round by us who only charges £10 for a trim and £50 for a set but he can't keep shoes on my horse for longer than 3 weeks so it isn't cost efective to use him, even if he is cheaper!!

Thats the same price I pay. £20 for a trim and £60 for a set plus £1 per stud hole. I know there are at least two farriers in Devon charging less than £50 a set of shoes but I have also seen the quality of the shoes, know the unreliability of the farrier and the irritation levels they cause whe the shoes fall off and you can't get hold of them.

In my experience the cheaper farriers generally are cheap for a reason. And a farrier is only cheap if your shoes stay on, and your horses feet are brilliantly shod.

With my farrier some of the horses go 9 weeks between shoeing - he will tighten the clenches but not always re shoe if the feet do not need it. So in effect that halves his prices and saves your horses feet as they have chance to grow.

I pay £25 each for a foot trim, bearing in mind my two are youngsters and can be naughty I don't mind the price. He really takes his time and turns up when he says he will so I think he deserves what he charges

My mare has just had her shoes removed and a trim as shes only going to be walking in straight lines for the next 6 weeks. He charged £20 which I thought was reasonable, especially after paying £60 every 6 weeks for shoes.

Thats not too bad. My guy charges me £63 each set and he is lovely. He's me go-to guy for advice.

He is really patient with my 18 yr old tb mare - she has arthritis in her right hip and when he does her left hind, she practically sits on him - and he has never raised his voice or his fists to any of my girls.

I would never change to another - he shoes racehorses, and i figure that if hes good enough for them, then hes good enough for my girlies.
