Farrier costs

My farrier told me this week that he's putting up his prices in January to £30 for a trim up from £25. I don't mind the price rise as it hasn't gone up in 4 years but back in April he also started charging a call out fee of £15 without any notice. I know that he usually goes 2 miles up the road for his next call, so if he is charging each client that amount that's one hell of a profit on call out alone. Just wondered if anyone else is charged a call out fee by their farrier. I have 4 horses so in one year the price has gone up £35 per visit.
 
Call out fee! On top of normal charge?! No way- that is all part of the cost. Mine is £30 trim, £80 full set.

You can't box the horse to their house so he has to come to you anyway.
 
I've never heard of a farrier charging a call out fee but I would happily pay to my preferred farrier if it ment he would actually turn up when he was ment to! If your farrier does a good job and is reliable I would just take the hit, if not look for another
 
From January my farrier will charge a call out fee if he is doing less than 2 which luckily isn't a problem for me. I have just paid £110.40 for a new set with road nails!

We boxed a recently bought mare who was in desperate need of farriery to the forge. And used to regularly hack to the forge (different farrier) with our first horse.

That is a good point. He is never late and has never cancelled on me. I used to have a farrier that didn't turn up on a regular basis, used to drive me nuts as I often had to a take the morning off work to wait for him.
 
I have paid travel time and fuel costs before now for a specialist farrier from out of the area, and was very happy to do so. Have never paid a call out fee for a local chap though. Frankly if a farrier's work is good and he's reliable then I would be happy to pay anything within reason! Mine only charges £45 for a pair of fronts and a trim behind, and if he put his prices up I wouldn't be quibbling as he's fab and I am very pleased to have him do my horse! I am on a pretty big yard and he shoes most of the horses there, so it's very unusual that he wouldn't have a full morning's work each time he comes though.
 
£25 trim, £67 full set. He may be slightly late sometimes but always let's me know if he's going to be mega late and always turns up! He does a fab job.

I use 3 different farriers (trimming only) 1 charges 25, is very reliable but doesn't take anything off
1 charges 22 mostly reliable but takes too much off
1 charges 15, most unreliable farrier I've ever known, never turns up, ignores calls and texts and doesn't even let us know he isn't bothering to turn up when you have actually managed to book an appointment but he really does do a bloody great job so I would happily pay double his fee/call out fee if he was just a little more reliable
 
£15 trim, £45 for full set. He has got a few horses to do at our yard. His timekeeping is a bit random but he always lets me know when he is on his way and he always comes on the day I expect, plus he's a nice bloke and does a great job. Sadly he's threatening to move away!
 
I had a farrier years ago that used to charge £6 call out fee, I didn't know any better but since he moved away I have never come across another farrier that charges a call out fee.

I pay £25 a trim
 
I pay £90 a set with stud holes & copper nails for the 2 shod ones.
The 2 unshod are £25 a trim
No call out fee & will always come within 24 hours to replace a lost shoe within the event season.
 
£30 a trim. He just fits me in on a day when he is in the area. If he comes out for an emergency then a charge would be reasonable. That said my farrier came out twice for my mare when she was on/off lame and I had to force him to take some money.
 
I have no idea of the price of a trim as all mine are shod. Price went up about 12 months ago to £65 a set. He never lets you down & always texts to say he's on his way. He'll come back out normally within 24 hours if a shoe's been thrown. Refits thrown shoe for free however charges £10 is you can't find it & he fits a new one.

He's never charged a call out fee in fact I don't know of any around our area that do.

He's a great farrier, he was one of the farriers working at the 2012 London Olympics so he's well recommended. :)
 
I pay £110 for a trim and a set, I do not quibble as he is the best farrier I have every had.........he is also the only farrier I have ever had :D

He was also an oylimpic farrier. :)
 
we pay £75 a full set and £20 a trim not had a price increase in about 6/7 years as he likes to remind us! but hes excellent with my horse who has been known to be difficult to shoe does a very good job and is often early. plus if anyone looses a shoes hes there that day to put it back on, bonus of him living 5 mins away from the yard.

I remember paying £150 a pair when my old boy had imprints on :( Luckily he does fine in just ordinary fronts these days.

I have been paying £20 for a trim and £50 for a set of fronts and trim behind for about 7 years now. My farrier said trims are going up to £22 in January but it will still be £50 for the front set.
