My horse has been barefoot for over a year as out of work. His feet have improved immensely but have been looked after by a barefoot specialist. He is never lame after the barefoot trim. I could not get hold of my usual trimmer so with his feet getting bad starting to flare and crack I gave in and got my farrier. Since he was trimmed he is literally hobbling even on soft ground. What has the farrier done the barefoot person does Not? Hard watching and trying to.make as comfortable as possible. Lesson learnt, trimming is not created equal. Will he be ok?

Can you give him bute for a few days? Think some farriers just trim as if they are putting a shoe on and its too short for barefoot horses. It shouldn't happen.

Can you post some pictures Niko?, it's difficult to advise without seeing them
I suspect he has just taken too much off all over, especially the frog and sole? and maybe pulled the toe in too much.
Iv'e had the same thing happen myself and mine have been ok after a few days but i can't say if it will be the same for yours. You could boot him or stable on soft bed for part of the day? perhaps give him some bute for a few days? If there is no improvement i'd get the vet to have a look

He has more than likely trimmed the sole - that's why I stopped using a farrier, after numerous times of asking he still did it on a horse with not brilliant soles anyway. Can you get some boots and/or pads until his soles improve?
(As an aside, my horse has broken a lot of the lower wall thanks to the dry hard ground and his soles are now on the ground - resulting in soles like cast iron for the first time ever. The power of stimulation :) )

If he's that bad, I'd be getting the vet out. In the meantime, bring him in and treat as laminitis. Have a soft deep bed of shavings wall to wall and give him Danilon. A severe trim could trigger laminitis in a susceptible horse.

I would be thinking this way as well .

Thank you for your responses. As JillA had stated he had taken too much off all round. When I was able to look at him (they live at home with my parents & mum was present for farrier) he had taken all the calluses off the sole and frog. Hes turned out as I had a baby not long ago so he has as much time as he wants to recover with no pressure to ride.
He's getting better and took the dinner off mum's horse tonight when mum wasn't watching so obviously isn't feeling as bad. Not sure if it's because he's feet are faster at healing as have had such a good blood supply or I took the radius rasp and rounded them all as farrier left them sharp, as if to out a shoe.
Poor boy you feel awful but I certainly won't make the same mistake twice.

Please make sure your farrier knows about this.

If he is sore on soft ground he needs to see a vet for pain relief at least, do you have any boots you can use? If not there are short term options that might help.
