Farrier problems - What would you do?

First off i have 2 mares that just get trimmed every 6-12weeks, so not going to be a top priority of any farrier i know

First mare is fine, behaved perfectly and is done within a few mins

Second mare is very very funny about her feet weve worked with her for a year and a half now and shes still very nervous. She rears up when her front feet are done but she never kicks out with the back. Although she was only naughty when she had thrush but you have to be very calm with her other wise she gets worked up and then starts misbehaving!

We moved to this farrier just before i got 2nd mare, because a few people on the yard have him, hes got a fab rep and is a brilliant farrier and hes very good with 2nd mare!
But reacently the one who books him has been booking him at times we cant get there even though we all pre-book him, not just them!

Its getting really difficult because understandbly hes busy and cant always fit ours in seperatly.

If my girls were both fine with their feet i would just go with another farrier but im wary about ruining the hard work weve put in (she was orginally bad because a farrier hit her with a rasp )

So what would you do?

Get someone to trim their feet that a) has the courtesey to fit you in at a time convenient to you and b) doesn't hit horses period, let alone with a rasp.

A year is a long time to still be reacting.

if it was me i would have a chat with him and tell him how i appreciated all that he had done and that i would like to book him seperately to the yard and explain my reasonings why and then block book him for 6 months for a set day and time.

Not having been on a yard for 15 years i am aware that things may have changed and there are 'yard politics'

p.s i would try to stick with the farrier especially because you and the mare have made such progress.

It wasnt the current farrier that hit her The one that did used to do my horses but never ever ever will again trust me!

Forgot to mention, he comes up to do all the other horses shoeing, like us to all go in together but im not being told when hes coming, so its not his fault tbh!

mmmm first of all talk to the person who arranges and explain also talk to your farrier and explain if you book him far in advance he may be an]ble to work around you - ha may charge more but hey little price to pay. I was same when i got my little mare - she had been horrendously abused and at one point 3 men including a farrier had her pinned to ground and kicked shite out of her. I explained this to my farrier -who is amazing and he is so so good with her. he may growl at big lad who should know better but so sweet and quiet with baby. she now falls asleep when being trimmed that is when shes not trying to undo his apron. plus now I have a great girl on yard who helps me out if i cant be there - treust her totally 100% with my horses and im fussy who handles them

Sounds like you need to have a word with the person doing the booking - can you explain to them that you'd really like to keep your horse with the same farrier, but the times that are being booked are not convenient for you. You could suggest times that are convenient, give a few options, or just book separately with your farrier, like someone else said, a couple of bookings in advance.
