So I had the same farrier for 3years then his life took a turn for what ever reason and he turned to drink and drugs, now what ever you choose to do in your own time... fine. I dont mind but when you turn up to shoe my horse and your off your face, im sorry I have to draw the line.

So I found another one he seem nice and feet looked good. well now he keeps letting me down. So my mare has lost a shoe he said he could not come for 4days so i wait it out the 4days then on the day of arrival he texts and says he cant make it and he will call me the next day to rearrange. Well he didnt call and I have text and left voicemails as he does not answer and still no responce well now my mare has been shoeless for over a week and is foot sore and her foot is falling apart......... grrrrrrrrrrrrr

So I need a farrier asap to shoe her for me, ive been on YELL and called the farriers on there and no luck. I have called a freinds farrier too and he didnt return my call.

SOOOOO what is it with farriers? why are they so unreliable.

Does anyone know any farriers that will come out to Binfield in Berkshire?

My poor mare is desparado now :~(((

Plus my other two are due in a week and the other two are due in 3wks what to do....

The first thing to do is to contact the FRC and make a complaint about the "off his face" farrier. If owners don't report these things then farriers are not going to be held accountable for the way they operate.

Is the current one is trying to tell you in a less than subtle manner that he doesn't want your business I wonder? If he is away on holiday then he should have left someone to cover for him. Ring him up and ask him straight, does he intend to come back or should you look for someone else?

Sorry but I can't help with any recommendations.

I will PM you a number - mine is coming to me (Twyford) next Thursday (5th) at 8.30 so will not be far from you that day. Only had the ponies for 9months, but he was recommended to me, and he's always turned up on time or rung first if he's slightly early so far.

good luck... ive never met a reliable farrier yet :o

if you get stuck - id be tempted to go see the bigger yards in your area and ask who they use.....

My farrier is fantastic. Stuck with him when he had problems (gave him a telling off face to face though and asked just who would keep my horses sound and what did he think he was doing wasting all that hard work getting their feet right etc etc). Been with him for more years than I would like to say on here and is pratically a member of the family. Even my Mum calls him "her other son" and bakes him cakes.

Fantastic man. Not near Berkshire though I am afraid.

When you do get a good one treat him well, make sure there is coffee, buscuits ready as well as your horse and remember him at Christmas. Really good farriers are like gold dust. Give away your diamonds before you give away your farrier.

I would agree. Contact the Farriers Registration Council. Because Farriers are registered they are obliged to behave in an ethical manner. If they are reported then the disciplinary committee will look at the complaint and investigate further. If the case is found against the farrier then the farrier concermned will be disciplined by them.

Know your feeling all too well and its just so frustrating. Good luck finding a new one, and when you find a good one, hang on to him/her! Not sure about down south with you but here up north they are certainly hard to come by!

Finding a good farrier in my area is harder than picking hens teeth! I've been disappointed by 2 farriers and am now on my third. My second farrier failed to show up once and when I was nice enough to offer him my money again I stated that I was disappointed that he had not turned up and he just shrugged his shoulders and said "oh didn't I show up....mmmm..oops." I was so horrified- hopefully my third farrier will be better. I think they find me a bit of a waste of time as I only have one pony for them to trim- but there's nothing I can do about that as she's at home and my other one's on loan atm. *end rant*
