Farrier was supposed to coming to yard at 9 this morning to shoe my horse and YO's horse. I got up early and rode my horse at 9 thinking he could do the other first and then by the time he had finished I would have done too.

Was riding around and could see no sign of farrier so thought maybe hes not doing YO's horse and just coming to do Gin. Got off Gin and looked at clock and it was 10:15. Still no sign off him. So I untacked Gin and rung farrier at 10:30, no answer.

I now have a horse that needs shoeing and a farrier who is ignoring me. I have had enough. He is so unreliable ATM, he used to be so good. I dont see why I should have to chase him up everytime hes late, surely it wouldnt hurt for him to call me. If his business was anything else, like selling sofas, he would be bankrupt by now.

So if anyone knows a good reliable farrier in W. Yorks or S. Yorks boarder then let me know.

im afriad all farriers are like that, i havent had one yet that hasnt not turned up at one point or another, or not answered their phone!! my current one (whos great, but also not the most reliable) has a secretary, but even she dosent know where he is at times!!

Im sorry to hear you are having trouble Nat, are there any other farriers in your area with a better reputation? I must say, i am ver lucky with my farrier. have had him for nearly 2 years, and has never been late/not turned up. A rarity it seems!

ah, see that always changes them!!

must be something about suffolk farriers sarah, mine is the same, if he is going to be late he will phone, he will even get the horses in and shoe them and the last lot of shoes he did i never even paid him for until he came again for the recent lot!

My farrier is really pushing his luck, I text him over 2 weeks ago and I've heard nothing back (this happens every time). There are plenty other farriers in the area, think I might be changing! I'm not sure what it is about farriers and being unreliable, it seems the good ones are few and far between!

Aaah this happened to me not long ago!

I called my farrier to see if he could come out, adn he said he would text. Fair enough, but didn't hear from him for a week. By this stage TT had lost a shoe. So I texted him and got a reply saying that he wasn't even in the state! Something that he had forgotten to mention when I first asked him to come out. No other farriers in the area were available so we had to wait it out. It took another week (and another lost shoe) before he came.

Another farrier that is sworn by in the area (I'm still to figure out why- he's overpriced and very poor quality shoeing) doesn't always show up, and doesn't call if he's either going to be late or not show at all. He often sends his assistant to shoe as well, not accompanying him when HE is the person people are paying to shoe their horses...

There's good and bad in every breed!

One of ours didnt turn up today. But then he never turns up on the right day so we really werent suprised!! Prob is that one of the horses he does is hunting on Sat and has a hind shoe hanging off.
Great.

Fraid they are not all like that, my new farrier is brill. I got fed up with waiting all day for the old one to turn up and then smoke 10 fags drink 3 brews and take 4 hours to do 2 sets! Got a new very good farrier who turns up on time, only needs 1 cup of tea(though I offer again) and does both in 1.5 to 2 hours) and he always books next appointment and requires no chasing.
I have to say that my uncle is a decent farrier but I wont use him because when/if he turns up all he does is critise my horses!

If your farrier regularly is unreliable then you simply contact the Farriers Registration Council. All farriers must be registered with the Farriers Registration Council. No one else is allowed to practice Farriery apart from those on the register. This is as a result of a Royal Charter however, this means that farriers must comply with an ethical code.

The Farriers Registration Council are obliged to investigate and if there is a case to answer then the farrier concerned will be brought before the disciplinary committee for them to deliberate as to what action should be taken.

They will then take appropriate action.
