I would imagine the no BACS rule is more to do with ensuring you actually get paid promptly (not spending hours chasing weeks later).
Especially for a 'new' client that won't become a regular.

the Horsey world is sadly full of non payers if you speak to anyone who doesn't get cash in advance / on the day.
Our local rug wash has 100s of rugs they have done for people but people don't bother to come back to pick them up.

Bank transfer is paid instantly, it is just as quick as handing over cash. Doesn’t bother me whether someone wants cash or transfer.

The trouble is a lot of yards are in rural areas with poor signal - very easy for someone to use this as an excuse not to pay straight away and then 'forget' to do so. I can quite understand a farrier wanting a new customer or a 'one-off' to pay cash on the day to prevent this.

I don't understand why you are so cross. Your farrier is injured, he's arranged someone to cover for him, you don't want to use the replacement, so you're trimming your own. If anything it will save you a few quid until your own farrier is well enough to come back.
I agree with you I hope the farrier gets better soon but no one knows when they get ill or injured

I've had the same farrier for well over 30 years, shod all of mine. I am happy to pay whatever he charges. Currently £30 for a trim and that includes the shetland. Then my old boy depends on what he has done, as he is currently in pads. They are all shod/trimmed every 5/6 weeks, i book in for the year. I always pay him cash, he thinks it is hilarious, but then i know when he leaves there are no bills to pay. He has a book which is full of people he has to chase, who pay by BACS, what a rubbish time consuming job. I couldn't care less how i pay anyone, and what they chose to do with that money. I don't do online banking so always pay my bills cash, including the vets. If my farrier recommended another farrier i would take his word for it they were good. He knows me well enough to know what will and worn't work. Round here we tend to know all the farriers anyway. I do laugh when he tells me people are always moaning about costs, he does a bi annually increase of £5 and it goes down like a lead balloon. It is the price of a Costa!!! If you aren't happy with what has been offered find someone else.

My farrier charges £45 per trim, one horse one Shetland pony. That's £90 for less than an hour's work including driving to me,he lives locally. He's injured at the moment, I wish him a speedy recovery. Meanwhile he says he's going send out a friend to help him out. Turns out the friend only accepts cash, only early morning and only has a first name. I've cancelled.i am not getting involved in tax avoidance and have no idea about his qualifications if any. There's no registered farrier of his first name anyway in a thirty mile radius on the farrier registration website. I'm disgusted.
Be cheaper to use a barefoot trimmer at that rate. My farrier charges £ 25 per set trim
