I have a gelding currently in rehab for PSD surgery. When he had his op, the vets were very unhappy with the state of his feet and wouldn't release him without first doing a corrective trim and the advice that my current farrier should pay specific attention to foot balance. His hooves were a completely different shape when he came home - his toes were much much shorter. We had a lady come and do a massage on pony yesterday and she has also noted in her report that care should be taken to balance his front hooves and make sure heels are at the same height. So given I've had it mentioned a couple of times I am a little concerned my farrier isn't doing as good a job as I'd like.

However, to be completely honest I don't know nearly enough about hoof care to know whether he is doing a good job or not. Red flags for me are that he didn't want to see x-rays from Rossdales, does all his work by eye without any sort of measuring (is this a thing that can be done? Assuming so?) and also that now two sets of completely independent professionals have flagged foot balance as an issue. He was also happy to let his apprentice have a crack at my boy's feet which I didn't feel comfortable with given he'd just had surgery (I understand he has to learn, but given I have two horses would much prefer he practice on the one who is actually sound...!).

Am I being unreasonable?

And does anyone have recommendations for farrier who cover the Ely area?
