Ellie lost a shoe on Sunday. I texted my farrier to ask him to come out this week (he normally is with me within 48 hours for a lost shoe), only to discover that his wife was in labour - understandably, he wasnt going to be in any position to come out to me in the immediate future! He said he'd let me know when he could come out, but when I offered to try to find someone else he was happy for me to do so - he just said to get back to him if I couldnt get anyone.
There are two other farriers who normally go to our yard. The first is currently on holiday; the second agreed to come to do Ellie with three others he needed to do on either Tues or Weds - he said he'd let me know when. Tues went by, and so we arranged for Mum to be around on Weds so she could hold Ellie whenever he turned up (I wont ever let her be shod without someone there). But in spite of numerous calls and texts, he didnt reply with a time and failed to show up. The other people who he was scheduled to shoe horses for (he is their normal farrier) were very cross as they felt he was messing them around a bit. I texted him Weds night to say thank you, but I'd have to find someone else....only for him to come immediately back and say he'd be there Thursday morning instead - no good for me as both Mum and I were at work. So I said no, and sent a text to my farrier to say I'd had no joy.
I have still had no reply from him, and he is not answering his phone (I have left a message). I'm not sure what my best course of action is now - obviously it isnt good having a shoeless horse, but she isnt lame and is able to be out 24/7 at the moment - and obviously I wont ride whilst she has a shoe off. The shoe she is missing is a hind, and although she isnt quite due for shoeing yet (normally goes 7-8 weeks in summer, currently gone 5 1/2) he feet arent looking too good. So what do I do?
Should I hang on for my farrier to get all his baby business out the way - even if that takes us to the end of next week? Should I try to pull Ellie's other hind shoe off myself so that at least she is balanced behind? Should I try to get another farrier (I am reluctant to do this as I trust my own guy implicitly, and there is no one else in the area I would really want to shoe her all round). Or should I ring my very-much-estranged (farrier) father, LOL
('Dad, I know we havent seen you for 8 years but can you still come and shoe my horse for me, just this once?'
)
Suggestions please
