I am a qualified farrier about to set up for myself after spending the past few years since i qualified working with other farriers. I have read on post on the site that there seems to be alot of people who are really needing a farrier up in Aberdeen.
I currently stay in Lanarkshire but would consider going up if there would be work for me.
Any feed back would be great thanks. William

i live near LAurencekirk, south Aberdeenshire and although I am lucky and have a fab farrier, all the ones i know of arent taking on anyone new and some folk are struggling to get one at all.

Hi, I would suggest you try advertising locally and maybe commuting to do a couple of days per week until you get an idea of the interest. There are quite a few farriers in the area but many of them are busy and not able to take on new clients. Good luck!

Im Huntly/Inverurie area and i am desperate for a farrier have been let down AGAIN by the farrier. I have 1 more farrier left to try then i am having to get a barefoot trimmer out or do it myself!!!

Aboyne area you would have a LOT of work, theres only really one and you cant book an appointment at all even if you are existing client, he comes when he's ready. Several weeks wait even for a cast shoe to be put back on. And it's all nice and pretty scenery and near Balmoral and the current farrier is not a young chap, so lots of future business prospects.

William,

EVERY area around Aberdeen is in desperate need.
I am north, Peterhead direction, lack of them up here.

It is quite a large area but if you were prepared to travel a bit, say do north one day, south another etc etc, you would beable to get lots of clients.

The problem is farriers dont turn up, dont answer phones, the usual.

If you can turn up when you say you will then you will have a waiting list very quickly!

I can easily put an advert through the riding club for you, as others no doubt can through the other clubs.

Good luck!

there is a shortage of farriers up this way - i have a really good one that turns up on time etc but i know that they are all really busy and people struggle to find one
as suggested above try coming up a couple of days per week and i am sure you will soon be booked up full time

YES! We need farriers!!! I have had to resort to getting the guy who comes up from Ayrshire - but after 2 of the horses wouldnt catch I am not sure he will want to come here again as he is on a tigh schedule it seems.

So yes......come!! Cos if you are good and dont mind trimming grass kept horses then can I be your client?? hehe

We do have a shortage, especially of RELIABLE farriers! My current one is good when he comes, he does let me down occassionally though when he disappears and isn't contactable for weeks! Last year, I ended up getting my barefoot trimmer to take his shoes off as I gave up waiting for him to come and do it.

Just make sure you don't charge too much - costs seem to vary greatly up here. I currently pay £45 a set which is acceptable, wouldn't pay more. If you can do us for that price then by all means let me know and I'll be one of your clients! ;) We always supply the usual coffee & biscuits, have a sensible horse and stables to do it in :)

If you do make it up to then deen - I considered moving my horse up here and was quoted 100quid a pop for shoes....... daylight robbery vs what I pay in central scotland but considering the livery costs up here I guess there is plenty people happy to pay above the odds!

I would day be worth shoe-ing in aberdeenshire a few days a week at those rates!

i pay £70(i think - tend to give hima blank cheque :o) for full set + 2 stud holes in each shoe - i have a good farrier and i'm happy to pay him that - but i do know there's a shortage up here and i don't think he takes on new clients...

ETA - i'm in perthshire ;)

my farrier told me all the guys in aberdeen are currently shoeing an average of 13 - 15 horses a day and hardly any will take on new customers as there books are full.

i think in other areas the average is about 8 a day, but you will know that

hope that give you an idea of the demand there is for farriers in this area

i also think aberdeen / aberdeenshire is the 2nd most populated area of horses per head count only after newmarket.

i think you would be welcomed with open arms and have no problem getting a full book of clients

I am in Moray Which is desperate for good farriers. I am very lucky and have an amazing farrier who comes from Skye and is worth every penny! he comes to me every 6wks. He works his way down through the Highlands, Moray and then in to Aberdeenshire then back the way again on his way home.

Can I ask who you use?

I am Perthshire also and have a farrier but not totally happy with and struggling to find another. We pay £65 a set, seems to be the norm round here.

You would be in very high demand. I live 15miles out of Aberdeen and we always have lots of trouble only really 3 farriers who do south of Aberdeen. Know a lot of people in my riding club have major trouble - one girl has to travel her horse 30mins to another yard in order to have her horse looked at.

Blairgowrie area. There are quite a few farriers round here but the good ones seem to be busy and not taking on new clients and also a few I wouldnt use as have seen their work on other peoples horses.
It would maybe be worthwhile looking into this area.

HI, I know this is an old post but did you move up to aberdeen! I am desperate for a farrier in pitcaple/inverurie!!! anyone know of one... looks like im going to learn how to fit shoes myself at this rate!!!!

I know this is a really old thread.. But just wondered if you are still short on good farriers in Aberdeenshire?
My partner is a qualified farrier (a good one too that cares about the horses more than the money) and we are looking to relocate somewhere that needs his services. He's very reliable, always books in for next appointment and is very passionate about what he does :-)
