My horse had farrier out today. He has soft tissue injury in coffin joint.Xrays have been done no navicular but has long toes and weak heels so is having remedial shoes heart bars and gel pads and has been in these for about 10 weeks.
The farrier trimmed off as much as he could to get his toes back and trimmed/parred(?) inside the hoof for gel pads .We noticed he had bruises could this be old bruising working its way through the hoof.
Would you say this is a good thing or bad.?
Im not sure if bruising is growing out .thanks
Perhaps should mention that he is tb so very flat feet hoof quality is good as hes on supplements

I have had similar happen when old bruising can be seen. It's normally a shoeing or two after we've known he's had a badly bruised soles. However, this has never happened whilst he's had gel pads in. Has yours had gel pads in for long? If so I suspect the bruising couldn't be old bruising from a normal bruised sole as the gel protects from this. I don't want to criticise your farrier and I may be completely wrong but could it be from where your farrier has cut back too hard? I know you want to get the toes back but this must be done very gradually to prevent damage.

Hi there gel pads have been in for about 10 weeks. When he trimmed back the colouring disappeard so I imagine it was all trimmed out.He is being pared back more for the gel pads because his feet are flat catch 22 I think.
I should have explained a bit better the bruising was more a patch of bruise toward the frog where it vs at the front not around the rim of the hoof or front where he is being rasped back.
Does that make sense.

It was more like a patch possibly where he spent months walking over hardcore. This is why I moved yards to help his feet. Could be stone bruising.

Yes then definitely sounds like deep seated bruising and the timing is right. Jesper had it happen exactly the same once or twice and once a tiny bit of fresh blood came out from a newer bruise. It's probably good news that's it all gone
