This is a pointless post but does anybody else get driven mad by their farrier. I've been asking mine for 2 WEEKS to come, he hadn't even got back in touch when his apprentice, who is friends with my OH, text him to ask why she needed shoeing? Hmm let me see.... so any way brought her in to ride yesterday (I hadn't ridden for 4 days) and she had lost a shoe. So rang him to tell him (sarcastically adding that this was why horses tend to be re-shoed) and he's going to come this week.

l know some farriers do have a reputation for being a little unreliable occasionally!! Luckily mine isnt! How about rebooking every time he comes?

No - mine is brilliant!
 
Mine is fantastic! He has even diagnosed lameness over the phone and given me instructions for dealing with it and his advice is spot on every time. He has had horses his whole life, so it is not just feet he knows all about. And he's a laugh. And the mare thinks he's the best thing since sliced carrots. No, we are very lucky.
 
Major falling out with mine last night, when he got back from fishing and I told him I'd had to bring the broodmare in because she was lame behind, and I thought she had pus in her foot. I asked him veeerrryyy nicely if he would have a look at her "tomorrow" and he completely went off on one.

I'm getting fed up with having to beg, so I stomped off to catch the pony, wondering what farrier in his right mind would want to come and shoe for me with my perfectionist OH hovering about, and by the time I got back to the yard, he'd got out his tools and tied up the mare, and guess what, one little scrape with the knife and the gunk poured out of her foot. He then "suggested" I put a poultice on it, and went back indoors. 10 mins later he came back (guilty conscience) to ask if I needed her holding while I did it. Too late.

Yes, mine is dreadfull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Trouble for me is, there's only two farriers in the area i'd let shoe my horses, and they're both as bad as each other.... the first one was my cousin!! fell out with him big time!! and the second one i've been trying to get intouch with for 2 weeks now... i've given this whole afternoon over to annoying him with a phone call every 2 mins untill he answers!!!!!!

Trouble is, theres another two farriers around, who answer their phone whenever you ring, come over when you ask, and ALWAYS turn up on time.. major problem tho!! i'd do a better job of balancing a foot and nailing a shoe on!!! they are USELESS!!!

You just can't win can you!!

i have had so many useless farriers and i thought id found a good one but recently my farrier has started not tuning up and coming up with stupid excuses and now my ponies shoes are hanging of his feet!

However, I am still waiting for the vet, who I rang at 11.30am as a semi-urgent callout - he has just rung to say he has to go to an emergency the other side of the county, and will come to me first thing in the morning. I thought about that for a while and have just texted him to say No, tonight please!

Mines fantastic - I am lucky, and I know it.
Why don't you make your next appointment before the farrier leaves, then you don't have to try to be 'fitted in'
