Some of you may remember the nightmare I had with my farrier a few months back, my horse threw a shoe and he said he couldn't come out for 3 weeks, and I'd been unhappy about his attitude towards my young horse.

So, I decided to look for another farrier. I tried in excess of 15 farriers with no luck, until (when I had reached despairing point) one rang me back. So he came and shod my horse, great.

I didn't change farrier for my pony for various reasons, but her farrier STILL hasn't been, we arrange a date, then he cancels, or we can't get hold of him. It has now been nearly months since my pony was shod, and it's just awful! We haven't been able to get anyone out because they're so busy, I feel like an awful neglectful owner with a pony with feet in that state! Luckily my farrier is coming this week and has agreed to do my pony too.

Sorry just needed a rant, I think it's completely unacceptable, my mare is old and very arthritic, and the last thing she needs is overgrown feet!

I went through that with my boy, I had him at home and I called every farrier within 100 miles, and none would come out. On did say he would but then would never turn up and would be doing various things like Driving a lorry for his brother etc!!! I called the ILPH, RSCPA, all the vets the farriers reg council but there is NOTHING they can do! So after 7 months he FINALLY got seen to, but only because I moved and took the horse with me.

What really frustrated me was the my next door neighbours pony got done, but the farrier didnt have any space to take on anyone new or the time to do my horse!!

In your case I think you just need to get the vet to take your mares shoes off, as thankfully my boy was unshod and we had a patch of hardcore in our field and we also took him on regular hack and as his feet were hard when they did get trimmed they only needed filed!

i normally cant praise my farrier enough but today she was sposed to come out a 10:15 and shoe my mare we told her we might be a bit late and she normally waits or rings us when she gets to the yard if we are not there but today we got there at half past 10 and waited til half 11 tried to ring her txt her and there was no response she has never done anything like this so atm we are just hoping that she is ok but i am so annoyed cause izzy's feet are really bad atm and i haven't been able to ride

Can't you slot your pony in with Flash? I would have thought that would be a great solution.....? I also think farriers tend to be more committed in the long term if they have >1 horse to shoe...

Yes I have slotted her in with Flash now, but it's been such a nightmare!

Beau2005, we had the same problem when I was trying to sort out my gelding, a farrier came to the yard to shoe 2 other horses yet wouldn't even look at Flash, let alone put his shoe back on!

I had hell with my EX farrier a few months ago! Arranged a time... he didn't show. Finally got in touch with him 3 days later and he said he forgot.. fair enough as it was the first time it had happened. So we arranged for him to come again, he didn't show. Another 3 days spent trying to catch him on the phone, apologized and said he had family problems, arranged another date and didnt show! gahhhh.

Then he did the exact same thing to another friend of mine.

Luckily I know the farrier I have now very well and can't see me having any problems.

I think we have been through every farrier in the area at some point! We had one for years but i bought an unhandled cob and once i could handle him and pick his feet up i asked them to give him a trim, but not to worry if they couldnt as i diddnt want him frightened, his assistant was very rough with him so we changed.
Farriers seem to come on time and turn up when they say for a while then dont bother.
We had a great farrier, always on time, good with the horses, always phoned if there was a problem, weve been trying to get him to come for weeks and he just keeps saying he will ring us and doesnt. Luckily (its now about 15 weeks since ours saw the farrier!) weve got one comming on monday, at least we THINK we have! Its a new one so dont know what he is like yet, but at least he answered the message we left him.
Its not like we expect the farrier to catch the horses or teach them manners, or stand in the rain, ours are bought in ready, they can work undercover in the rain, and all our horses are good to handle, not like some i know with bad mannered horses who expect the poor bloke to catch the horse as well!
