Farriers and hours of work

Probably not the best way to word title but what im trying to ask is what is the latest your farrier will make a vist?
Will he/she work in a well lit stable/barn?
 
Mine will generally shoe up til about 6pm provided it is under cover and well lit although he also has flood lights he can plug in. Really depends how late your farrier wants to work I guess.
 
My OH is a farrier and works all hours. In summer it is not unheard of that he works till 10-10.30pm. He has a headlight so even if the lights are poor he can still work. This time of year it is generally more like 8pm and that is plenty late enough when he is cold, wet, hungry and tired and getting little or no thanks for his efforts.
 
I try to keep my work between 8am and 5pm. Sometimes this doesnt happen and i work until 6 or 7pm and sometimes i dont get home until gone 8pm, but i try and keep those days to a minimum. I leave the clients that have lighting until last appointment but of course in the summer it doesnt matter.

Ill ask this though, how late do you think we should be working?

What makes you say this?
Has he go horrid customers?

I am always polite and thankful to my farrier :) .... even when he is a grumpy pig ;):D.

To answer TheFarrier, I think 6pm is late enough to be finishing.
 
I wouldn't expect my Farrier to be at my yard beyond 6pm - everyone has the right to a life. besides after a hard day at work I don't want to be standing around waiting for a farrier ;)

I'm not saying farriers sould work late (I think 6 is late enough), I was thinking more of working hours in winter with less day light hours as I know my farrier wont shoe or trim in a well lit barn/stable as he says its not as good as natural light which limits the time he works til. Im not complaining I was just curious as to what others do.

I also do thank my farrier, am polite and he gets a cup of tea or coffee :D
 
My farrier lives just down the road and will often go home and come back out when he know's I'll be home from work :) We've been friends for years and he knows someone will be there before but tries his best to make sure he can come when I'm there - he once came Christmas morning to replace a shoe lost Christmas eve for Boxing day!

Its not that his customers are all horrible I just think that some of them dont appreciate what he does for them. Especially during show season where (for example) he is called at 8pm by MRS X that she has a competition the next day and the horse has come in with a shoe off. He will do his best to go and sort it that night (could be up to 10pm) so as not to disapoint and often doesnt get a thanks. He will remind MRS X to make sure she books shoeing in regularly so this doenst happen again but of course the same thing happens again next time.

Not all his customers are horrible thought and the ones who are appreciative of the time and effort he spends make it all worth while. I just get fed up sometimes in summer when we only see eachother when its time for bed!!
 
We have an absolute gem; in the hunting season he's been known to turn up at 11pm (YES, 11pm), put yard lights on, get headcollar and replace lost shoe!!! It does help that all the horses are good to handle and he hunts with us too! :D
