Farriers - anyone else's put their costs up?

Just had a text from the farrier who's done my horse whilst I've been at work. Gone up to £70 now.

In the last 2 years having my horse shod has gone up £20. That is an astronomical rate considering he gets done every 4 weeks. Anyone else suffering same problem?

I can see why though..

Its not easy on the purse, i know, Ted is also done every 4 weeks. but fuels gone up immensly and steel prices have hit the roof! never mind the insurence, which is also astronomical.

Yes my farrier has gone up this time from £65 to £70

I now pay £86 for a full set with Natural Balance in front and 8 stud holes.

It is a lot of money but my farrier is fab and I know I get what I pay for

I've just worked out that its over £900 a year to have the horse shod. Bl**dy hell!! Still - he's a good farrier!!

Currently paying £70 for a set. But am expecting a rise in price shortly.

I still pay £50 for a full set at my foal is going to be trimmed for free... worrying now that price of my farrier might go up :S

I only pay for fronts, £25 if he puts same ones back on - £30 for new ones. So I guess it would be double for all 4

Mines gone up a £5 so will cost me £55 tonight, for a full new set with road nails.

Nope mine is £68 for a new set and this lovely man shoes some top 4 star horses too, he bloody knows his stuff ! £48 for re fit !

i'm expecting it any day soon, but things have gone up so much steel, diesel etc... and IMO you do have to pay for craftmanship, less grumpness would be grand

, but it's in the breed!!!!!!!!!

And my farrier is grand and will never except extra monies, so I pay in chocolate and cider!!!

Mine at the moment costs me nothing.. I am trimming him.. so much easier to just do it when he needs it.

I charge £10 a trim. so i suppose i'm cheap lol

I dont know yet but if you bear in mind the spiralling cost of Diesel and the cost of steel.

My partner works in a small engineering works which has been struggling with this and has sold up and made him redundant. They havent actually sold the business just plant and machinery so as they say Farriers are people too and they have to make a living.

£55 for 'remolds' (refits)

Price has just been put up, but he is such a good farrier and kind to horses and with the price of fuel I do not blame him.

Mine has gone up £5 this week to £65.

He's been shoeing my horse for 12 years so i wouldn't change him, even though he shouts at my horse for fidgeting when his arthritic hoof is being done!1

Mine gone up from £50 to £55. If its that expensive to have a set, can your horse go without behind?

Mines £70 a set now (full set NB Shoes all round)- I don't consider that too bad as well over a few years ago when I used different Farriers I was paying over £70 a set then!

Also fuel costs have increased and also steel prices have gone up immensely- if you think about it most steel comes from China and they put their prices up and were holding a lot of the steel back- and then you look at their Olympic Birds Nest Stadium and all the steel it's made out of

It doesnt take much working out really why there has been a cost increase!!! if the Olympics hadn't been held in China maybe we wouldn't be paying so much for a set of shoes, who knows!!!- maybe I'm reading into it too much!

Went up £2 each to cover increased diesel costs April time - £60 a set for new with road nails and £55 for refits

Mine are barefoot and have gone recently up by £2 to cover the extra cost of fuel - first time in two years so I am not complaining as he does a good job and even smiles now

Only by £5, which I'm not too bothered by because he's an excellent farrier.

Our farrier has put the cost of shoing up by £5 in 7 years. the cost of a trim has remained the same at £10.

I have the best farrier in the world, he is kind to merlin, never shouts, never fails to turn up, phones if he will be late, I dont always need to be there if I am working and today the vet says he thinks his feet are fantastic ..... good news when you have a potential cripple

I pay £70.50!!!

It went up about 18 months ago when he started paying VAT

QR - My farrier, who has relatively recently gone from self employed, to working for the MET, as well as keeping *some* select private customers - we are some of the select *some*

Has therefore, recently, put his prices up (as we are now always out of his usual hours) from £60 to £75 (£80 now Be has to be studded!!

) But I am happy to pay it. He knows my horses inside out,

Always does the best by them as individuals, happy to give advice on the phone about all aspects, & they adore him

Not only he is *always* there to give great advice, & a free of charge, (putting on a lost shoe

) I think he is great

He is a friend as well as a great horseman

I know where I could get a cheaper one, but not even tempted to, as he is *very* worth it
