Farriers are not gods! - Frustrated

My farrier is away for 2 weeks and Fly threw a back shoe yesterday so I rang the covering farrier and explained that I had a show today. He said that was fine he would be at mine at 8.30am. Well of course he did not turn up! Its now 10.am and 4 phonecalls (unanswered) later I have given up. Managed to trick him into answering phone by using mobile number I got off a friend and he said that his car wasn't working this morning. Obviously the trauma of a broken car stopped him lifting up the phone. So, he promises to come tomorrow......yeah, right. I don't mind if they say no but to let you down like that is so rude. Thing is, got to get shoe back on so will have to bite tongue.
 
Totally agree! If he didnt want to come then he should have said no. Not left you waiting around for him. Id be livid!

Our Farrier is sometimes like that but YO lets him get away with it!

Allthough when he broke down a few miles away a few weeks ago, he hobbled (part of his leg is fake sounds strange a farrier with a fake leg!) all the way to the yard, then they drove him back and jump started his van
 
Its tales like this that make me glad my horse doesn't wear shoes! At a dressage comp on Saturday and someone held up a shoe in the warmup asking if anyone had lost one. Was a great feeling for myself and my two friends to not even have to look down to check!

I do think that it very poor of the farrier not to ring. No one can help having things go wrong that prevent him from actually arriving, but in this day and age of mobiles, there is no excuse in my opinion not to get a message to the client.
 
OMG I KNOW!!!my farrier went ill, which obviously is a reason for being off work, so that was fine, but zak was due to be shod the day before, and we called him as he had not got in contact, saying 'dont ring me ill ring you', and his wife went livid saying 'hes ill he cant shoe your horse' but mum couldnt say 'it would have been nice if you'd let us know' because if your remotely rude to them theyll just dump you!-i had a show the next day-so we tried to get another farrier, and when ours found out that we had tried to get another farrier he went mad saying oh im getting no money...youve just gone off and rang other farriers behind my back....!its so annoying they are like goldust and have to be treated with upmost respect....but they are so rude!!

I seem to be in may farriers good books at mo - but last year - nightmare - have two tbs and get very foot sore w/out shoes, so thank god my farrier is a babe at the mo!
 
my farrier is absolutely brilliant!
Always turns up, normaly on time and if hes going to be late he phones you and even more shockingly he has turned up early before! he also is nice and helpful and gives me a call the night before to remind me!
He was injured reacently and he arranged for someone to cover his appointments and came with him to supervise.
he knows everything about my ponies and well not even try and tell me to put shoes on something just because it would give him more money.
reacently i had a pony who i thought might need shoes on the front, asked farrier what he thought and he said he could put shoes on it and it might help but as the pony is retired it isnt worth it and we should just have a bit of corrective trimming and all would be well.

I had to pull a shoe off Anna-Marie week before last as the clenches had sheared and shoe twisted so it was dangerous. Her feet arent the best at the minute anyway - so removed it and rang the farrier - couldnt come for over a week even just to put one shoe on ( but was at yard to shoe other horses ! ) ... so I rang round to find a farrier to refit the one shoe so her hoof wouldnt fall to bits - and the new farrier came out same day to fit it ( didnt charge me ) and said he could sort her cracks etc if I wanted to change to him. So booked her in for a full set and she had her first hot-shoeing on Friday ( and , totally unlike her , was a total bitch for the new farrier as she found everything too scary but he was very good with her

) and her feet already look a lot better though will take a few shoeings before they're right.
I know my old farrier will be put out and may not want to shoe for me in the future but its a chance I'll have to take !
Unfortunately she came in from the field yesterday with a nasty kick above her knee so now has at least a week off and will be longer before I can jump her

Farriers in Great Britain are in the fortunate position of having to be being placed on the register of farriers. This means no one else can work as a farrier in Great Britain.

However this privelidge obliges a farrier to comply with a strict code of conduct which is backed up by an ethical committeee.

If a member of the public or an organisation has a problem with a specific farrier then they are open to contact the Secretary of the Farriers Registration Committee who is based in Peteborough and he will arrange to have the matter investigated.

For a serious offence a farrier can be permanently struck off the register.
 
But how many farriers have you ever heard of being struck off!! It just doesn't happen and they close rank BIG time someone dares to challenge.

It's best not to get me started on farriers, I've had a (continuing) nightmare with them!
