What are your thoughts/opinions on this? We have a few different farriers that come to our livery yard and one in particular (not the one that I use) opens his van and lets his dogs run free all over the yard, going mental through fields with horses in, I've caught one of his dogs taking a dump in my stable and the other one cocking it's leg up against my car! Apparently it has p1ssed the YM off on more than one occasion with his complete disregard to safety/other peoples belongings etc and just thinks he has free rein to let his dogs do whatever. Anyone else have this problem?

As several have said if the dog behaves its fine..

My mums dog is always loose and fab with the horses and they seem to be quite fond of him these days..

We all love the farrier's little dog. Farrier is very good and makes sure the dog is behaving and everyone is happy :) If he gets a bit OTT he goes back in the van :)

Our farrier's dog behaves impeccably (putting my own to shame lol)! So never a problem it being free on the yard... however the dog being allowed to mess in a stable is disgusting, I'd definitely be annoyed about that

I used a young farrier for a while, he used to appear with two large dogs, who used to proceed to dump pretty much everywhere - the farrier seemed to think this was no big deal - it used to make me very ANGRY.

He was a rubbish farrier, who would turn up days late, if you were lucky enough for them to turn up at all. Thankfully I have someone else now, who knows how to tell the time.

My vets, farrier and mostly anyone who comes to visit has dogs and they all let them out to run. I don't view it as a problem though. If it bothered me then I'd ask them to keep their dogs in their vehicles or at home. But it doesn't so I don't :)

Me too, I had 4 dogs here (now 3) one more dump in the grand scheme of things isn't the end of the world. However if the dog was a PITA or a danger to itself then I would say something.

My farrier had an old JR that literally just hobbled about - no problem , but one day he brought his girlfriends younger dog, which promptly got into my guinea pig run and killed one of my girls - i'm not sure who was more traumatized me or her ( GF) , needles to say the poor girl was in hysterics , and although i was gutted , i just tried to smooth things over , my little guinea , ruby , never had a chance and was killed with one bite - thankfully quickly , but it's a lesson to all , needles to say the dog is either on a lead , in the van or supervised , oh and the guineas now live in a separate bit of garden , well away from harm.

my farrier doesn't have a dog!:p
I wouldn't be bothered having dogs running around if they were not causing a bother and if i knew one liked to crap in stables i would make sure all the doors were shut;)

One farrier that used to visit one of the other liveries on the farm used to let his dog out the truck as he was driving down the track, did it for ages with no problems but then one day dog ran under truck and was killed, farrier was devastated but no longer lets his new dog chase his truck!!

It wasn't the cfapping that bothered me,heck I live in the country it's what animals do...it was the dog running under my mule and bouncing around that pissed me off! I was worried enough about handling my mule and the farriers impatience without having to watch his dog was't kicked or spook my equine.Nowadays I think I would ralize it was my job to protect MY herd and leave him/her to look after theirs.(But now I have a BF trimmer and they take more time to do the job properly so aren't rushing)

I wouldnt want my farriers dog running around, for safety reasons while he is shoeing.
The dog does come and sits in the van, if its too hot, the dog stays at home.

Farrier's dogs should abide by same rules as all other dogs on yard, no? If there aren't any rules displayed get YO to laminate a notice. I've seen them on many yards.

This. Fine to bring IF yard owner happy but only if they behave and are under close control, just like any other visitors dogs. Otherwise they stay in the truck! I would be unhappy with the crapping let alone the rest of it - it is his temporary workplace and YOs property not his personal dog exercise area.

Hubby keeps ours tethered unless invited to do otherwise and always picks up their craps.

Dogs crap, that's not the issue, it's whether the farrier picks up after them or not!

My farrier brings his dogs with him, but they stay tied up on a long lead, and if they take a dump, he clears it up. He's a very well behaved farrier (and he always turns up on time!!) :D

I dont mind dogs if theyre under control.
Worst was a girl who didnt even have a horse but helped her friend on a yard i was on who bought a young GSD then proceeded to tie it up on a lunge line to her stable window bars when she was mucking out and stting fair. it was a bloody pest, running underfoot of both horses and people who were around, she wasnt happy when asked to keep it under control.
She never even paid livery, cheeky bint.
She didnt see it as a problem that it was diving about in the middle of a stable block with stables either side and horses going about
Not the dogs fault, but the idiot that tied it their stable

My farrier brings his dog to my farm, however he does not let the dogs out. He'd be more than welcome to, which I'll tell him next time he comes, but he's very polite.

My dog is shy so tends toward a kill it before it kills me sort of attitude. Our farrier used to leave dog in van for it's own safety. Until the day he left window open and my dog jumped in. We found the 2 dogs cuddled up in passenger foot well! One of the vets from surgery I use has a very rude dog. Jumps up and muddies me when normally i've popped out of work to get a weekday call out fee and pees on my hay nets. He just watches it.

Sorry but I do have a problem with it. I don't understand why everyone assumes people are ok with dogs... not everyone likes strange dogs.

I also don't like it when people come round and bring the dog in as if it's ok, without asking... I let happen of course but they don't get an invite back. Poor cat dives under the bed and is so scared she pees on my clothes... real animal lovers my guests aren't they?

I don't do that with my animals, why do I have to put up with it?

Does my nut in!!!! Grrrrrrr..........

My farrier always asks if others are on the yard.

Hes round our house often enough with the dogs so if its just me up he lets them out automatically. They are JRTs and tend to spend their time ratting which the YO likes anyway.

Although watching Teal and a cocker join is funny as they cant figure how the JRTs get behind all the hay.

well behaved dogs which are cat proof/friendly are welcome on my yard. tho our farriers and vets always ask "is it alright to let the dog out?" question. i personally always shut my dogs away whilst shoeing, as they get in the way looking for feet trimmings, then later i have to deal with the sicked up hoof! if the dogs drop a log i do like it to be picked up tho. and i would politely point this out if i thought it was unseen. dont mind doing my dogs logs but no one elses!!!

Mine has 2 JRs they just run about with their toys in their mouth. Not worried about them getting in the way of pony as he just puts his ears back at them and they seem to know to move! Ether that, he strikes out with his frOnt leg, then it's the dogs fault for being in the road.

They tend to chase the cats though, farrier gave it a good telling off though and they continued playing.

Obviously if the crapped and pissed against my things id be raging and would ask him to put them away which he probably would oblige to.

I'm glad this issue has been posted. My farrier has a pooch who lets it jump out the van and mooch about (although when he does call it, it does listen). This didn't bother me at all really, shocked me at first, but once I knew it was under voice control I was fine. My mare was the only horse at the time there and she is fine with dogs. BUT, I moved her to a livery yard 2 weeks ago and the main rule is 'no dogs on the yard unless they are on leads.' This is totally fair as it is a working farm, with livery on the side. But, what do I do when my farrier comes to the new place? Do i tell him before hand when I book him in or on the day? What if he says he's not coming then? I am a tad stuck of how to approach it. I dont want to come across as up myself, but do not want to upset my new YO.

Mine doesn't bring a dog, I don't know if he even has one.
If he did I would ask that it stayed in his truck, I have a 'No visiting dogs' policy on the yard, one rule applies to all. It just isn't worth the hassle to me.

My own dogs would go beserk at another dog on their turf (guard dogs, and in a compound, but they'd make a hell of a racket which is annoying, I also am not sure what they'd do with a dog if they did get hold of it) and I have cats, rabbits, goats, poultry etc - none of which I want to risk with a strange dog.

Once someone ignored the rule and her bloody little JR cornered one of my cats (and it meant to cause damage) the cat literally fought for her life and got in a lucky strike and got the dog in the eye. Stupid person (who was only a visitor) reported me for having a vicious cat

Just ask him to keep the dog in the truck or on a leash please and that it is a Yard Rule because of the farmstock/machinery/dogs/cats whatever and applies to all.

I can't imagine that he would take offence, surely there must be some places he goes where the dog isn't welcome or safe to run about (like mine for instance)
It wouldn't be terribly good for business if he insists his dog has free run of the place, I am sure he wouldn't hold you over a barrel like that.
