Farriers.. feet people...

knowing this horse's feet very well and what they SHOULD look like i am shocked at the state of them!

this is a horse with excellent conformation, no brushing or movement issues and was in regular work with me with no shoes and no issues.

you were totally right to get the shoes off- why the hell was he trying to make her feet so boxy??
 
You werent wrong the shoeing job was not good. The shapes were not good... but like i said with the pictures its harder to tell. Also when taking them make sure the whole foot is in the frame

However i hope anyone reading this takes on board the picture thing i brought up. It really does make a difference as i have seen some pictures make a perfectly good shoeing job look bad.

She would have been lame then because the shoes were pinching and possibly causing sole pressure especially if he chopped her feet back so hard. They will grow back!

When is your own farrier seeing her? If you can i would suggest leaving the shoes off for a few weeks and apply cornucersine libberally to help them grow then get your own farrier to put shoes back on. of course your own farrier will have his own suggestions but that would be mine.

my own farrier is going to leave it a couple of weeks as i want some more growth and no more holes in her feet,

ive already started tonight with the cournecresin.

she wasnt even footy on the gravel so im not to worried, will just keep an eye, and make sure of no splitting/uneven wear. i can avoid a lot of road work.

well what can i say, im so sorry to ellie, i trusted a proffesional establishment with her welfare and i was very wrong.

my farrier had her feet looking good, originally i was doing hunter class as devon county and he wanted to go for the best shod award.. they lloked fabbed, a good shape, and in excellent health.. my farrier always complains abot how much growth all my horses have on there feet all year round.

now i have a few more stories about the farrier that done this, i may well lodge a formal complaint. ive also got vids from 1st day when she was very lame.
 
Are you still keeping here there after that? As surely a member of staff would have of watched the shoeing and seen it happening and not stopped it?!?
 
If she is sound without the shoes, not footy etc - then why does she need them in the first place?

no, she moves to my own yard next weekend, the member of staff that was on didnt see her shod.. i didnt go to the staff i went staight to the top of equine.. its not possible to go any higher.

shoes went on as i was doing a lot of road work and her feet couldnt cope with it, also as a show horse, its not overley correct not to be shod. yeah yeah , i know these things shouldnt matter but at the end of the day they do.

My farrier used to do this with my old boy but make a tidier/nicer job of it. I wouldnt be happy with the puality of his work!
 
oh and have you all done the 5 year farrier training? just robbed the heels and shod a little short by half to 3/4 of an inch. but the knee to fetlock to pastern conformation hasnt been shown! good luck. shoe it yourself!
 
My farrier left my mare's shoes wide onfront for various corrective reasons for a while but he ddint make the foot fit the shoe! I know another who is having her horse shod with pads and shoes to left the heels and vet thought the old farrier shod him too low and could have caused arthritis!!
 
Poor Ellie! I do sometimes feel that shoes cause more problems than they solve, but that's coming from someone whose ned is barefoot and went lame on the front when shod. I'm sure in a few weeks her feet will grow and your normal farrier will get her back to normal.
