Farriers inability to follow simple request has set us back months!

we have been known to leave a laminated sign up saying road nails please :o

If I had given my farrier (or my trimmer depending on the horse :o ) a specific request via phone (be it.. shoe fronts only/refits etc) I would have expected them to put this in their diary.. surely that is what everyone else has to do to organise their days?

I do wonder if the mistake was genuine though.. given that he only trimmed the fronts and not the hinds :confused: so maybe just forgot which 2 feet had been requested but knew that only 2 needed doing..

I agree there's no room for people with no training at all.....however, I've studied aspects of training for both trimmers and farriers and there's good in both. And room for improvement in both.

Hopefully without both sides resonating an US and THEM attitude - we can all work together and learn from each other :).

I apologize if i seem inflammatory (not sure what you mean by that.. but forget it.)

I do agree with you, you are right, it would be a much better place if everyone came together to discuss how to improve the way equines feet are done.

I'm sorry if i came across like i was tarring ALL barefoot trimmers with the same brush, i though i'd added in my last post that i do know a couple who are good.. :)

I think the farrier should have trimmed the hinds only... as requested.
I'd never leave any of mine alone with the farrier.. not since I carefully pinned the cash in an envelope to the front of the stable door and got a text from my farrier later in the day saying 'please dont tell me the bits of paper all over your stable floor is my pay!' Big horse must have thought it was really funny chewing it to bits!!... lesson learnt :o
 
I have used the same farrier for 6/7 yrs now and I'm almost never present when he shoes my boy as I don't want to use time off work just for the farrier visit!!! In all that time he has always done as I have asked, put road nails in, stud holes etc... I trust him completely and I think that's how it should be.
If it were a genuine mistake then fair enough (although a worrying one IMO) if it wasn't a mistake and he went against your wishes then I would be looking for a new farrier!
 
Wow! I missed one appointment and left specific instructions, please call the firing squad for me now it was clearly my fault entirely!

I have been through 8 farriers and 1 trimmer in 35 years with horses, I have only had one farrier in that time who I would trust to do a really good job with their feet, left alone, but he was brutal with them if they misbehaved and I mean brutal.

So I will speak to the farrier next time, he has one more chance, as it could have been a genuine mistake, I am going to reiterate the following:-

1) Do NOT remove the sole or frog
2) Do NOT rasp any higher than one third from the bottom of the wall
3) Do NOT leave me with a lame horse, leave me with the sound one I provided

Its quite simple, it should be on every farriers to do list for the third one, but I've lost count the amount of times I have seen over the years a horse dog lame after a farrier visit!

I long for the day when shoes are thought of as a nessesity for a horse who is not in good enough health to cope without, and can only hope that in 100 years, it is a banned practice!
 
Snopuma, is your YM there when the farrier is trimming your horse? I'd get him or her to supervise next time the farrier is there and check he is following your instructions.
