what is it with farriers! i thought i had good relashionship going with mine been using him for over a year, have got him tons of business he was forever ever changing my dates/times as he knew i could be flexible, if it was cold he got a hot drink in the summer he got a cold drink if he was early or late hed text me, due out this tuesday i completely got my days wrong so he was there on tuesday, i wasnt oddly enough i had text him confirmed time and date but didnt hear back get a text yesterday saying hed been sat at the yard waiting for half an hour! 1st time ever and he b***** knew i could be there in ten mins! why didnt he text me when he knew im 100% reliable!! so for last 2 days been really really pleading for forgivness did i get a call or a text? no! so have now booked with someone else! but just to top it all of my dam horse loses ashoe last night and im due to have a lesson on monday!! huff puff stomp stomp stomp....

sorry guys thanks for reading rant over! (are all farriers this bad with communication)
 
It is so difficult to get a good farrier that I think they can get a full of themselves and some times treat their customers as if they are doing them favour not providing a service we pay a blo*dy fortune for!!
I know this certainly does not apply to all farriers but it can definately be applied to some of the ones I know - I don't think customer services really come into it!!
Luckily we now have a farrier who is 100% reliable - always turns up on time and is brilliant wih youngsters - I keep him happy cause wouldn't want to lose him now - definately a rare find!!
 
well thats what i thought mine had even been offered bacon sarnies on cold winters mornings he does other horses in the area and i have 2 that are done at the same time, both good as gold to shoe, have now booked another farrier but if current one does make contact not sure weather to sack him or not!!
 
I'd wait and see if he contacts you and decide then, if not see what the next farrier is like.

While I can understand your frustration, I suspect that he might have been running late anyway so having to wait another 10 minutes for you to turn up would made him even later, so he took the easy way out and went onto the next call to make up time. I'm not saying it's right but I know how a farrier's mind works, being married to one! It's particularly tight for time this time of year when the evenings are getting darker because not everyone has good lights on the yard, so if he runs late then might have to cancel the last call. He probably hasn't called you because the diary is absolutely packed and he can't work out where to fit you in - again the short daylight hours are a problem this time of year.

Nope, mine is great. I called him the other week as Sparks had been stupid in the field and manged to pull half of one nail out and lifted all the clenches on the inside of the same shoe, so was going to ask if he could pop in, if he was passing that week (not urgent, urgent as had manged to get the pulled nail out and even though clenches where lift shoe wasn't too loose). Dave was in Cyprus (didn't know this when I phoned), so told him not to worry as thought it would probably hold till he got back. Bless him the next day he called to see if I was up the yard as he knew another farrier who was working up the road, so had arranged for him to pop in (if I was there). How's that for service??? I LOVE MY FARRIER and no I'm not married to him!!!

Wish I could say the same about mine - I'm always last in the queue to get my horses feet done

Me too! It's far more of an issue getting your OH to shoe your horses than ringing up and booking a farrier. He shod for me for about 10 years before we got married, never a problem - now I threaten to get someone else, but his ego is too large to allow another farrier near my horses' feet!

my farrier is excellent,in the past if one of the horses has pulled a shoe he has gone down the yard (on more than one occasion) ,got it in reshod it and turfed it back out again.i havnt even had to go down there! a couple of weeks ago one pulled a shoe and he arranged to come over then later on phoned to cancel as he couldnt make it,rearranged for the following day and he reshod it for nothing as he couldnt keep original appointment.
 
Neah - had my farrier for about 6 years and he's ace - will even fetch my horses in and start on them if he's there before me. Sometimes he has to cancel or re-arrange, sometimes I do. He's worth every penny would be lost without him.
 
gosh i must be very very lucky then, mine is great, came out on a saturday the other week when i called him late friday night cos i lost a shoe (first one) and coming out tomorrow night having called him tonight to reposition a shoe. yes he can quite often be late but im quite welcome to call him and say hey ho where are you etc and he is really nice

must get some tea/coffee/sugar etc in my tack room and keep him sweet (the kettles been wired up to go for ages but im so slack!). good luck with your shoe and getting ready for your lesson.
 
and while we are on the subject,nearly everyone i know dislikes their farrier but sticks with them for various reasons??? i had one once, didnt like him and changed simple as but reading this maybe it is harder to find a better / more reliable one? i must stop recommending mine (have done to about 6 people) and keep him all to myself!!!
 
the earliest ive manged to get anyone out is wed morning, im hoping current farrier is just making me sweat, i had even offered to pay a call out fee as it was my fault. last farrier was great hed do my horse if i wasnt there, if it was just a case of a lost shoe, or if i was desperate id take the horse to him on a sat morning! but he didnt take a lot of care in his work was very much slap the shoe on current farrier was great!!! we shall see!!
as far as lesson goes i cant cancell it, pluto has lost a back shoe which is a black foot, so thought id give it a coat of stockhom tar just to protect from bruising and have a easy lesson!
