Hi everyone

Does your farrier;
Take 2 - 3 weeks to put a shoe back on?
Tell you he is going to come out on a certain day and time, not turn up, not phone, and when you call the next day, tell you he'll phone back in '10 minutes' which he never does?
Send apprentices who have only just started with him, to shoe your horses unsupervised?
Turn up about 10 days late for the appointment he set?
Insist that he still wants to do your horses, when asked directly, then continually fail to show?

I think I know the answer... :(
PM rants about farriers welcome to make me feel less alone!
S :(

Er..no!

My guy is there within the week if I phone for a routine appointment..if it is an emergency and he can possibly do so he will be there the same day. He replaces lost shoes within a week of fitting free of charge (I have never needed this services as the shoes never fall off)

Mine is a bit of a pain ringing you back, but he's a very good farrier so I put up with it. He helped my horse through lamintis. And now he's helping my new one with his Ringbone. So not all the same, although he has been publicly slated on this forum in the past.

Nope, sorry. Ours is always on time (or if late, he rings) fixes lost shoes for free unless it gets ridiculous. Comes out time and time again for my sisters horse who due to foot confo gets nail bind really easily.

Is quick, efficient, and the vet at the hospital commented on how well my horse was shod. We've had him for 25 years - I dread to think what will happen when he retires :(

mmmmmm......think I'd be looking for another farrier. My farrier is very good, he's hardly ever late and if he is he rings or texts you. If a shoe is off he out the next day too and has lots of time for you. My mare had lami last year and he was always there at the end of the phone.

Two of the four shoes fell off within a week as he had let an apprentice do a rather bad job, so I suspect he didn't plan on arranging another visit so soon.

I'm kind of old fashioned and always thought it was rude to chop-and-change farriers and vets etc - but think it is time to axe him?

Perhaps I am too polite for my own good. :(

Nope, never.

Always came when booked in.
Always responded to emergency calls.
Didn't take apprentices so only him to deal with in 1st place.

Mind you, that said - he's just had to retire :( and has been doing mine for over 26 yrs. So, have a new chap coming out next week for 1st time (on last farriers recco) so will see how things go. Only a tad worried as don't have a mobile number for him at present......but he's also a one-man-band so no juniors about to test out :)

Oh my god shils! Sack him!

My farrier's brilliant. Always turns up on time, and if he's going to be late, even by ten minutes, he will text and tell us. If tit of a horse yanks a shoe off, he'll be out the next day more often than not, and if I can't be there, just tells me to leave a head collar out and he stick it back on by himself. He's come out on his day off and at stupid o'clock on the morning of a show in the past to put shoes back on if I really need them.

He's fab :D

(Do always tip him though, and tea, coffee, biscuits are always on tap ;))

Sorry Shils, no farrier rant from me

Noooo mine is fab .........always on time and even early admitedly i do always ask for 8:30!!!

He is always at the end of the phone and will always turn up within 48hours of losing a shoe ......

Doesnt let his apprentices near my mare they only observe !!

He is worth his weight in gold and i know im lucky considering the other farriers that visit the yard. So im always polite and courteous to him making sure my mare is clean, mud free and he always has a cup of coffee and biscuits!!! In return i get the service i need and he goes above and beyond the call of duty on occassions.....

I've had a few... i had one who vanished off the face of the earth which was a shame cos he was brill. Then i used one who was impossible to get ahold of and turned up 3 hours late...
But the one i use now is fantastic, just very busy so you have to book well in advance but is quick and very good at his job

I book 5 weeks in advance, but then he still doesn't show up!
I think the five week date is just a starting line for me to start making my phonecalls to him, always with the response 'Can you phone back later' or 'We'll be out this afternoon' which never happens.
I need to give him tea with deadly nightshade in, I think (:p).

Shils I do not contribute much anymore but am laughing as I really cannot imagine you putting up with this. Are you just doing a windup here??:D:p

Cripes, I can't believe he isn't burning in your firse - or at least on his own furnace.

You hadn't struck me as the shrinking violet type!

Just to make it worse, no mine is wonderful. Turns up or lets me know well in advance and arranges another time nad if something goes wrong and he can't make it over to us is happy for me to bring a horse (or several) over to him. That's got to be a turn up for the books, the farrier supplying the customer with endless cups of tea!

And tonight he's done a major job on my little Cushings Welshy with the aid of x-rays, been sat on and squashed by the foal, dealt with foal's stroppy mum who decided that she just wasn't going to co-operate, and then put up with my middlesize Welshy who seems to have fallen madly in love with him and just wants to lean on him, rub against him and give him big sloppy kisses all the time. All this with a stinking cold well after dark poor man. And we weren't at my yard so the poor man didn't get cake with his cups of tea! We (the horses and I) are very lucky.

Nope my farrier comes when he says he will, shoes my horses without me being there if i have to work and is always willing to try to come out if I need him for an emergency (god forbid I have only had to do this twice :D

I used to have a great farrier before I moved down south.
He would apologise if he was more than a minute late, and always polite as well as doing a great job on my mare's feet.
RIP Kenny Mitchell.
