Well, some of you may remember my post the other day about not being impressed with my farrier....he came on saturday after I had been trying to get hold of him for a week as Flash desperately needed shoeing and had lost a shoe. He put the shoe back on but refused to do any of the others, even though I pointed out they were not going to last. He said he didn't have time (yet had time to hamng around talking and drinking tea).

Well, yesterday, as predicted, one of the other shoes came off! Contacted farrier who said it was not his problem what my horse gets up to in the field and he would not come out for another 2-3 weeks!

I can understand people are busy, but I don't think this is on.

How quick will your farrier respond to a problem?

And also, can anyone recommend me a good farrier in south east kent!? I am based in Thanet.

Thank you and well done if you've got this far, I'm feeling really fed up

I can see why you're fed up Harri. I hope you can change your farrier quickly.

My farrier came out 7am on a Sunday morning to replace a lost shoe. The owner was going to a show that day. He's also very good at spotting other problems like stiffness in the back and shoulders.

Bin your farrier & get another one!.....I can understand him not being able to fit a whole new set of shoes when he was coming out just to replace one...but not to want to come out again for 2-3 weeks is not right. You should be able to find another more amenable one.

Mine comes out within 48 hours, often less, he's punctual but if there's a problem & he's running late he phones.

I think if you go to the Farriers webby, they have a list of approved farriers? Or perhaps put a post out to try and get some attention from Kent peeps! My farrier is either there as soon as I call, texts me to say when hes down or will ring back to apologise if he cant make it. Hes great with spotting things, and will talk me through what hes done etc.
Plus he will happiliy shoe without me (not my choice, cant help working/college) and never minds, and tells me to get on with things!
Hope you get a new farrier!

I would agree that you could def do better. My farrier's ex Army so v punctual & if he's early, will happily catch a horse in & get started. Will listen & come up with suggestions for any problems & was always on the lookout for new ideas / techniques to try for my last horse who had a slight foot prob.

Usually comes out within a day or 2 to replace a lost shoe.

My farrier always turns up when he says and if my shoes are not going to last til our next appointment he will squeesh me in somewhere. I know he struggles to come up in the winter months if your horse loses a shoe but he will fit you in ASAP, also if his day changes he will let you know and squeeze my horse in.

I think it's time to get a new farrier!
Have to say I can't fault mine, He was due to shoe my 2 but I knew Olympic wouldn't last because his feet were getting pretty long and despite being busy he came out at 7:15am the next day

my farrier will come out within 24 hours for a routine trim. For an emergency i'd imagine he'd be out sooner.

He has his own horses so he does understand the importance that when you need a farrier you NEED a farrier.

I have met some complete prima Donna farriers in the past and would not entertain the idea of having them near an animal of mine.

No Foot No Horse, and I rely on my farrier to keep ponio sound and comfortable.

And drinking tea and chatting? Mine does his job and leaves.

Really?

Most farriers are really busy but will fit you in somewhere or even if you have to go to their place to have it done...my farrier once fitted stud holes in Dutchies feet at 7pm in the summer as we found out a qualifier was to be on grass the next day! He was also a great farrier but for the regulars they can usually fit you in.

Change farrier!

If your farrier is unreliable, I say change to one that can be bothered to do some work!!! Farriers are bound by a code of conduct(Farriers Registration council) and I dont think that its acceptable to wait 2/3 weeks!! unreliable= get rid!!

You could try this website to look for a reliable alternative:http://www.farrier-reg.gov.uk/
gd luck!

followng on from this, and this http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1967563/an/0/page/4#1967563 and this http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1962963/an/0/page/3#1962963...

I still can't find a farrier! I've phoned 9 now and nobody will take us on at all! I just don't know what to do! We've left messages with a further 3 but not heard back yet. One farrier won't take anyone on, but I know he is an excellent farrier, and he said he would take us on when a space is available, but that doesn't get past the fact my horse has had a shoe missing for nearly a week now and its another 2 weeks before my current farrier will come

What do I do!? He's so foot sore and I've already had to cancel going to 2 shows and a lesson, and his feet are so long he's tripping all the time. I hate seeing my horse uncomfy
