Initially it took a while to sort out something that my dog could eat which his bowels could cope with. He has been on Chudleys Sensitive mixed with a a couple of spoonfuls of Chappie (mornings only) which has been marvellous and his packets are not perfectly normal and I do not want to change his food. However, he is very farty - especially in the evenings. I know some of you might say its the Chappy but he only gets a couple of spoonfuls in the morning and is not particularly farty during the day. He is also quite stressed on a car journey in that he stands still and pants quite heavily and quickly obviously not very happy, and boy does he pass wind!! We go to dog training classess in the evening so he farts in the car on the way there and farts in class all evening - so much so he now has quite a reputation in class! But this also happens when he is relaxed at home in front of the telly. The vet told me to check the fibre content of his feed which I did and it is only 3%. Suggestions please!!

It probably is the Chappie - it has quite a lot of cereal in it to bulk it out. I would drop it completely - if you feel he needs some extra protein I would give him some tinned fish eg tuna, sardines etc or the occaisional egg.

There is a lot of cereals contained in dog food s to bulk them out - their guts don't prcoess them adequately which leads to a build up of gas in their gut - which in turn leads to farts.

What breed is he?

I personally would look at changing him from a wet food to a dry food. Ours tend to be really windy on canned food - also find they have very sloppy poo. THey are all on ad lib dry feed and just snack every now and then through the day.Solves the problem of guzzling down food at speed and taking in loads of air with it ttherebye reducing gas in the gut- and also means that we have no feed time panics. They leave their bowls before it is all gone and come back and snack when they feel like it. Their poo is easy to pick up and it seems to have solved the sensitive stomach problems they had on canned feed.

OK will stop the Chappie and see what happens - the Chudleys is a cereal cube. He only gets a third of a tin once at day anyway but will give it a go. He is an Irish rescue - looks like a T3 labradoodle. Its not possible to give him food ad lib as he was a stray and so would eat the whole bag if he could!! He does gulp his food though so will put a rubber ball in it to slow him down.

One of mine was a stray and they are both lurchers, and I have managed to get both labradors that come and stay with me and all 3 springers to move on to an adlib diet - it does work, the first day they guzzle it down, day 2 they eat most of it but by day 3 they self regulate, just eating when they need to. The reason dogs wolf their food down is that they only get one/two meals a day and thats it. It becomes a big deal and has to be stuffed at speed. for mine, and my visiting dogs food is no big deal - its available when they are hungry, but the all tend to eat little and often and has a marked improvement on wind, and poo within 3 days.

Our pup has always had a farty problem whatever food she is on. Her Mum doesn't so I think it is just something some dogs have!
I bought one of those "brakefast" bowls to slow her feeding down and attempt to get less air going in but I can't say it really helped. I don't think eating horse/sheep droppings helps much either!
FWIW she is fed Orijen npow but she still stinks so bad I have to hide inside my polo neck till it's safe to come out!!
