I'm thinking about switching my show jacket to navy from black however my fixed peak is black and I can't afford to buy another hat along with a jacket. Would it be odd to have a black hat with a navy jacket with black boots?

Is it only me who thinks showing people make up rubbish rules to keep it clique and a barrier to entry.

There is absolutely no safety argument against a different coloured hat and is the is the judge is distracted by it ..... well most judges I have met have the dress sense of a muppet so that doesn’t really hold credibility.
So I guess it depends on how much you want to inflitrate the crazy world of showing!!

oh gosh, spat my coffee when I read this. Couldn’t stop laughing.

I will admit to having the dress sense of a muppet both as a judge and outside of it. When judging I couldn’t tell you whether hats and jackets match or the difference between a navy, charcoal, black jacket. Its all about the horse.

Actually, I’m going to go right out there and say I love the new styling of helmets and the technical fabric that the SJers are wearing. When will showing catch up?

And don’t tell me that tradition is always elegant because I will ask you to explain why those poor little girls have those enormous red ribbons tied to the sides of their heads in the show ring and the rosettes on brow bands that could double as frisbees they are so large.

Wear what you want, recognise that horse riding is a sport and needs proper clothing.

I think I phrased it wrong I meant show jumping! I was wondering if I would be judged by people or not! I did saw a showing video the other night though and it scared me a bit how everyone was dressed it all looked very expensive!

Even for dressage, I wouldn't worry about blue jacket and black hat. But then, I only plait up for regionals or if I really want to impress/have spare time on my hands once we arrive. Usually we are barefoot. Rarely have whip or spurs. And, shock-horror, don't wear a flash noseband :p

PS. despite all that, we are usually in top 3 BD! I find the judges don't judge me for that stuff, they care more as to how the horse goes.

For show jumping especially, I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Yes showing does need to catch up with the times! Woolen jackets in the height of summer!?! Seriously!

That's not traditional! If you look at old showing pictures you won't see oversized bows and rosettes. That's just mothers trying to outdo each other

I can see why showing has a dress code. It won’t be so much to prevent a blue jacket with a black hat but to ensure uniformity so that competitors can’t stray into the feathered headress and see-through lace jacket territory.

Keeping uniformity will definitely be less distracting, and ensure things don’t become ridiculous in a competition which is based on presentation and aesthetic.

Not that I don’t think the some of the horses have become ridiculous but that is another thing entirely. It seems that people have just found a different way to be ridiculous...

In terms of fashion, I think navy and black can look great together. In non-horsey life, I have a lovely navy light weight coat which has a black trim. It is a complete life saver because it can work on either navy or black, and gives me the excuse to wear black boots.

So for all other sports, I would go black boots, black hat, black whip, and navy jacket, and see how it goes but I’m not great with rules ?

In jumping or dressage, I doubt it'll even be noticed. If you have a black hat, black boots, and a Navy coat, I think that'll be just fine. Plus, people are quite used to just seeing hats as black so they mostly go unnoticed.
