Would you give a small feed of fast fibre before riding? It's only because he expects his breakfast and will be an idiot if he doesn't get it. Riding is just low level schooling for 1/2hr - mainly walk xx

Depends how small, id personally feed a small feed of the likes of readi grass myself. However if it is mostly in walk etc i dont suppose it would be a problem especially if you groom and tack up for 20-30mins for the safe side.

It will be fine, I often feed Ben a small scoop of watery Kwikbeet before a longer ride, seems to help with keeping his energy up too as well as giving him some liquid.

Thanks, couldn't see why it would be a problem as like someone else said it's just fibre. Didn't need to it anyway as weather too foul to think about riding xx

Don't see why not - ours often get a handful of hay before work, so wouldn't have thought there would be any probs with the fast fibre. Ours don't get theirs until after work though as their tea - mean mum lol!!

It's a very good idea.

When they are working the stomach acid can splash up and cause pain to the unprotected, upper portion of the stomach.

Vets recommend a bucket of alfalfa and oil prior to work for ulcerated horses....

Alfalfa is out for me (not compatible with my forage) - but the FF would do the same job of giving that acid something to do, rather than splash around and cause problems.

When i was reading up on horse ulsers lately and they advised to feed chaff before riding to settle their stomachs. My horse is a bit of a git if he doesnt get breakfast first, i usually give him a big handful of chaff with a tiny amount of mix in it, by the time ive groomed and tacked up 20 mins later he's fine.

I often hack out after my boy has had his breakfast. Fastfibre and non molassed chaff. I don't start off at a fast pace and he has always been fine.

He'd be gutted to miss his breakfast!

I realy dont understand why ud rather a feed over a haynet/ soaked hay and feed after riding?

Convenience - I'd rather give mine a scoop of chaff while I'm tacking up than wait around while he eats a net of haylage. Never been a problem...
