Hi, after some advice been recommend both of these feeds by different people to help put some condition on my growing 3yo Welsh D.
She’s currently on stud balancer & chaff. She lives out 24/7 the grass hasn’t grown still & we’re not allowed to put hay out in the fields (nightmare), she lost a little weight & obviously is a growing youngster so needs to maintain weight to help with her growth.
Does anyone have any experience with either feed? I don’t want to send her crazy with energy, she is worked (lunging and long reining 3 times a week). Thanks

Fast fibre is ryvita for horses.
Coolstance Copra is butter for horses.
A growing youngster does not need any extra weight on their limbs and are better kept leaner. Weight does not help with growth it can hinder joint health.

Could you bring her in and feed good hay for the day and turn out overnight.

Fast fibre is straw , so for slimmers
Could you bring her in for a couple of hours to a net
Youngsters can be skinny/gangly, they soon pickup when the grass grows

Fast Fibre is diet food in my book. Try Muscle & Focus instead, works a treat for my horse through the winter (she gets diet food in the summer, Veteran Light).

A cup of micronised linseed would be healthiest but they are designed to loose weight then gain again in spring/summer, it helps maintain insulin sensitivity and safeguards against future metabolic issues so unless she is really thin I would just wait on the grass or as has been said above bring in for some hay if you aren't allowed to put any out

Yes absolutely I don’t want her to be over weight, just want her to get back to where she was & not loose anymore.

I can try to bring her in for a few hour for Hay, I’m really struggling to fit it all in as I’m having to work over time to afford having her 🙈

We all know that feeling, the only reason I work is to fund the horses and its been like that for 50 years !

If she is losing rapidly I might be worth a blood test and a look at your worming protocol. But if she is just a bit lean some hay should help her. Once she is mature you will spend the rest of her life trying to keep her slim if she is anything like mine. They were lean until they were 5/6 and from there on it was slimming world and remains that way in their teen years.

I feed copra in winter - it's appetising and really helps maintain condition, and is fat rather than sugar and starch which is great. But it's 15 mJ/kg, so high calorie - I'd be reluctant to feed much over the summer unless in fairly hard work.

Personally, I don't mind a youngster being a bit slim. I always think it's better for them when growing than being too fat. But if they need a little bit of feed, then choose something low calorie and high fibre - fast fibre is great, as is just a good quality chaff, grass nuts, or equivalent. Or just hay!
