Fastenings on rugs

Whats front fastening do you prefer

I just wondered what the majority prefer on the front of rugs and if it influences you to buy or not.


Which type of buckle or straps do you prefer. I prefer the surcingle fastenings best as the swivel clip/dog clips I find a pain and also add weight to the rug and after doing so many livery rugs this is my preference.

I wont buy rugs with the swivel clip for that reason.

i like the buckle and clip types, like mark todd and ruggles as it gives best range of adjustment IME

i would never buy T bar ones as zero adjustability.

True........... but what I find with the clips is the velcro on this type ends up coming apart and folding back under so the horses neck leans on the clip once this happens.

I hate clips on rugs! It's too easy for horses to clip themselves onto fences/haynets/anything else they can find so they can rip their rugs clean off! I have been known to duct tape over clips of horses that live out and pulling the rugs over their heads to take them on and off every so often!

What annoys me even more is people who do the clip up facing out the way! Grrr!

Buckles all the way for me I'm affraid!
 
I like the swivel clips - much quicker to do up and undo on a windy day. Use the velcro at the front to get the front roughly done up and then battle with a sursingle etc. Cold hands don't like buckles especially when trying to get a rug done up or undone quickly. Plenty of adjustment. Thankfully my sursingle Tbar front closure fits my horse well but he's narrow in the chest
 
I have absolutely no preference, the type of fastening doesn’t come into it for me. What does is the fit around the chest and the overlap - what I can’t stand is rugs where you get excessive pressure from the straps on the chest
 
I like clips, but I don't use haynets and they'd be doing well to clip themselves onto post and rail! I tend to buy ones with buckles and clips, for the adjustability, and find when they're well fitted, they're no problem.
 
I like clips, when I'm freezing cold they are the easiest to do. I've had a horse tangle itself up with surcingle style fastenings... I think horses can just about tangle themselves up with anything :rolleyes3: Rambos fit my herd well so clips it is :)
 
hate the t bar ones even on surcingles I struggle with arthritic hands and they frustrate the life out of me. Dont like dog clip ones either have seen lots of horses clipped by the front of the rug to varous things from haynets to wire fencing and even to a bramble so voted buckles they are most adjutable and easier on my hands. I never wear gloves and rarely get cold hands so they are easy
 
I put swivel clip and mean the Horseware Rambo type that clip onto the central ring. I hate it though when people do them up with the clip facing outwards.

My next favourite are the Bucas snap and close with the velcro strap over.

I find the double clips on the straps that can be adjusted are rather heavy.
 
Hate the surcingle type. They're just a faff, particularly with a youngster that has ants in its pants.

In terms of personal preference for me to do/undo I like the swivel clips, but I hate the velcro that is usually underneath them.

So more often than not I end up with buckles, which I find far easier to get to fit comfortably to a horse who is giant through the shoulder as one of mine is.
 
I prefer the trigger clips too, thanks to arthritic fingers. My horse has either buckles or trigger clips. I do think it would be good if all manufacturers put a flap across the fastening to prevent getting caught on nets or fencing or whatever, though doubtless some horses would still find a way!
 
i like the Surcingle fastening as it means no yard staff can over tight the rug!

i know it can be annoying as it cant be adjusted to fit every horse, i have just been lucky in that they fit Levi lovely

and we did have a lot of problems first winter with rugs being over tightened by staff coursing them to cut in :/
 
If I could get closed-front rugs, I'd prefer to use them - but they don't seem to be a thing in the Uk. I don't like buckles, prefer to use either clip or t-bar
 
I only buy rugs with swivel trigger clips, clip always facing inwards. I hate and avoid T bar clips, I have seen so many horses attached to their haynets by them. Can't use buckles due to arthritic fingers.
 
I have come to hate the trigger clips in this cold weather, cant seem to work them without taking my gloves off.
I have one rug with car seat belt type clips which I really like.
 
I like swivel clips one end and buckles the other, this gives plenty of adjustability but also gives the choice of removing the clips and just using the buckles if necessary for the individual animal although I prefer the clips for ease and speed of use. Hate the T bar or surcingles type - no adjustability, often get stuck if you turn them at the wrong angle and are prone to catching on fences and hay nets.
 
Shows how different we are I prefer buckles because I have bad hands others prefer clips because they have bad hands. I dont know if anyone makes turnout rugs with any other fixture on the sircingle but i really struggle with the t clips
 
Really like my bucas rugs where the t bar fastenings are covered, so there are no gaps at the front and nothing to get caught or snagged. Will only use buckle fronts on stable rugs or fleeces, not on turnouts.
 
i like the swivel clips too. Just easy and quick.

I bought a new rug before xmas with a weird looking Velcro system with a plastic thing to hold in place. I only got the rug as they didn't have any others, have to say its brilliant. Quick and easy to use, and hasn't rubbed at all.
