With me at his fattest, yes shame on me, I did strip graze and ride, school lunge etc with no hard feed however it still proved to be too much so this year we have really cut down, check the field and now him (summer 2010) with his other gilrfriend. Not a brill 2nd pic but you get the picture hopefully, however he is a huge boy with lots of bone. We have successfully been wearing muzzles for the latter part of summer up until now, so should be easier to manage next year as on the strip they dont tend to move a round too much. Would love to see yours and how you did it:)

Prepared to be slaughtered but if it helps others then so be it :)

Phil got suspected lami in 2008. All my fault. At this point I had owned him for 6 years, never really worked him lots due to confidence issues and had tried muzzling once but he kept loosing them. He wasn't rugged, hard fed or given hay but managed to come out of winter obese. He was on approx 30 acres with 15 other horses. Just to note, he was kept the same way as every other horse in the field (if anything he was worked more!).

April 2008, on the weigh tape, over 700kg :(

He came in lame one day and it was a real eye opener. So that was it, for the first time in 6 years he was stabled. For a month, no turnout. This kick-started his weight loss and he dropped about 40kg in a month. I was reluctant to work him too much because of the strain on his joints so didn't really start working him until he got down to 680kg.

And the work began, but my confidence was still low so it was lots of walking and being lunged, worked twice a day and stabled overnight. It was far too hot in the stable to leave him in during the day. In September he moved and continued to drop the weight. Because he had already lost approx 60-80kg come winter he dropped a substantial amount through winter. Again he was not rugged, fed or given hay.

In fact come spring he was looking rather poor! I put it down to not being worked and therefore he had no muscle tone. April 2009 he moved to another yard. He was approx 520kg!

He was sometimes put in a small field overnight, sometimes kept there for a week but mostly muzzled. And he has to be muzzled 24/7 otherwise he becomes uncatchable :( But still managed to creep up to about 580kg with the autumn flush :(

Last winter he was clipped, rugged, had hi-fi lite and lami-lite and was worked 3/4 times a week. He came out of winter at about 550kg and looking his best imo.

Unfortunately his loaner then dropped him, just as the spring grass was coming through. He was muzzled but with me at uni the work crept on :(

He generally stays at about 580kg during the summer, even when I'm home and he's muzzled 24/7 and worked 6 days a week. However he's still healthy and I try my hardest to keep the weight off of him. It's so difficult. He has moved again now and is being stabled overnight all year so I'm hoping this will really help with keeping the weight off come spring :)

End of August this year, 580kg.

Well done the pair of you :)
I wish my auntie would pay attention to people like you. I worry a lot about the weight of her horse, but nothing I say or do has any effect on how she keeps the horse, poor thing!

Also, they are both gorgeous horses!

Hi i know the pain, one thing i found rather than stripe graze or leave in the stable is to use the track or paradise method, which allows the pony or actually makes the pony walk a lot more, i have found it very good at maintance and a way losing weight

We've had bad luck thoughout the summer one foot abscess after another I think 3 from the beging to the end of summer!! He spent most of the time with Dr Green hence the podgy horse!!! After recovering from the foot abscess he had a strain injury from compbast sp?? Which took weeks to get right lots of cold hosing, slapping on gel on his legs then little walks in hand. We also had back luck with saddles that meant more time off as the saddle made a right mess with his muscles etc he luck that meant more time eating!! A change of saddler and now everything seems to be going in the right dirction. Im happy with his weight now just got to keep a eye on it as I do not want a podgy horse again!!

This is my sisters welsh mare a couple of weeks after we bought her. She was fat to begin with and then had three weeks out in a lush field before we could get near her to catch her (she had quite a few issues when we got her!):

It took us over a year to get her to an acceptable weight and she's stayed something similar since then. Ideally I'd love her to lose a little more but she doesn't get as much work as she could - she's too small for me and sister has to fit it in around school + music commitments - and can take any muzzle off so it's quite difficult. We'll keep at it though!

At the end of this summer:

She's unrugged over winter and gets minimal feed so has usually lost a little by spring - which then gradually goes back on again! We'll get there eventually. :)

Sorry if they're huge!

April 10 - Broken in and going well! :D
Actually around her Hips she lost a bit too much weight!

Even better shape now :D

Not meaning to be rude, but i personally think she looked better in the 1st pic when you had just got her with more weight on :o

We came from a showing yard:

We moved to a dressage yard:

I had his saddle checked last week, according to the saddlers weigh tape he is the same weight as when the saddle was fitted at the showing yard, cue my face drop...but he is a whole size smaller

This is about the most recent pic stood up

TBC - he looks absoloutley fantastic now! :)

Thank you bigboyrocky, I am absolutely paranoid about his waistline now, he had today off and I swear he's come in looking like a hippo  back to work tomorrow Shadwick :p

I'm well impressed with celia's little pony...how was that little mare not crippled with lami?!

when I bought him 5 years ago, he had been super fit in the March, this was in the June with minimal/no work though not that much grazing.

(I have just taken the feathers off this winter and I think it hasn't done anything for his waistline!

one from this summer, tbf he always looks slimmer when on the move when using his abs ;) clipped out so I could keep his workload up and he is now 17 so holds on to a bit too much fluff when its hot. As much as poss he does work, work and more work :D

Thank you...I think so too, but you know I want to be president of the "I love Phil" club, he's such a dude :)

AND even with the new slimmer waistline he still did alright a local shows this year...1st M&M and Reserve Champion

Ahh thank you :D

Good to hear you can do it without an obese horse! I thought Phil was fat but he's diddly compared to some of the examples in the show ring.

Just to compare, he was still weighing 580kg here, most recently in October:

AND! Well done to everyone who ever had to go through this :)

Never Fear BigBiyRocky - I do agree with you a bit! (As i posted, she did loose slightly too much!)
Its all shaping up nicely after a summer of grass and hard work! :)
