9 days ago I noticed out hacking that my horse had become lame. I dismounted and led him the short distance back (we'd only been out for about 5 minutes). I admitedly didnt notice any lumps/bumps when I was tacking up but on return I noticed that he had a slightly fat foreleg. He's a bit prone to knocking himself so hoped it was perhaps a case of that and waited to see what it was like the following morning.
The next day (last Sunday) it was extremley fat, with no definition in his leg from his fetlock to the back of his knee. He was slightly lame, but nothing aside from that (heat etc). Turned him out in a small paddock/pen for an hour before bringing him back in to see whether movement had brought the leg down, it hadnt. Stabled for the rest of the day. The following day it was still as bad and I had the vet out approx 3pm. She couldnt suggest anything obvious and so we arranged for the farrier the following morning to check for an abscess etc. There was nothing in either hoof.
Have since kept him turned out (quiet paddock during the day) and on re-ringing the vet, they have said to leave him for another 7 days, meaning 14 days in total. It had started to go down following turn out and yesterday morning he had 4 'normal,' legs so assumed whatever he had done had been rested/healed. However this morning it was again very fat with no definition at all.
Just wondering what other people would do/can suggest.
His legs do not normally fill over night and the leg in question is still fat around the fetlock despite a full days turn out. Would you be waiting for the next 7 days to pass, or would you be getting the vet back out/taking him down to the clinic. My normal vet didn't see him the previous time so I am tempted to re-arrange a visit with her this time instead.
Thanks!
