On returning from holiday I found the woman who was supposed to be exercising my horse had a completely different idea of exercise than most people!! in addition, for some reason the grass in my horse's field has grown like crazy. So my horse is really really fat. its been 2 weeks since then and even with minimal hard feed and lots of exercise he hasn't rele lost much weight. We are eventing in a couple of weeks and he really needs to have slimmed down for that. Does anyone have any ideas for quick wieght loss? He doesnt have a stable, but how do people feel about muzzles? any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks xx

The only way is exercise and reduced food intake. 1 of mine is getting a porker so she is in the stable during the day, has 3-4 out and then muzzle during the night. I hate having to put in on but having would be worse. Good luck

My lad can gain weight on fresh air and lives out 24/7 365, so is on restricted grass and has a muzzle on 24/7. He was doing well until a kind member of the passing public took it upon themselves to readjust his muzzle, so I had to put him on ten days of long or strenuous rides. It did the trick and he lost almost all of the 50 mm he had gained on the weight tape.

There is sadly no quick/easy weight loss plan for horses (or humans sadly). The only answer is more/harder exercise and a reduction in food value.

We have a little exmoor x shetland mare for my daughter who tends to be a bit porky. We got her a muzzle but it rubbed like mad and Myrtle managed to take in off every day without fail.
Only way we have found that works is to section off a strip of the field so theres hardly any grass. and put her in there at night, then let her out in the bigger part of the field with her chums in the day. Also my daughter rides her daily but i also lunge her before my little one rides, she has stayed quite slim this summer with this routine (Myrtle obviously not my daughter!ha ha)

I know the problem. Is she on hay, if so try soaking it for 10 or so hours, which takes sugar content out, and obviously restricted grazing. I had help from my feeds helpline, perhaps give yours a ring. Gave me loads of advice and its working. Best advice was not to starve - that can lead to all sorts of problems. And of course exercise. Good luck
