Fat or big riders... on small horses...

Starbucks - Does Castle look unhappy to you in this photo with me on board...?

I certainly don't think so anyway, and that's a still from a video taken last April...

Starbucks I remember when you sent me numerous PMs saying I was too fat for Castle (yes, I do think it's relevant to this post)... Granted, I'm not the thinnest rider, BUT if I was THAT big for Castle he would've let me know somehow... Castle was quite "cobby" though and was well able to carry me...

Is Castlle the horse in your sig? If he is you are NOT to big on him

I cannot get my head around how anyone could be so purposefully hurtful as to do something like this

People who are blessed with slim, well-proportioned figures do not know how lucky they are.

I'm disgusted that anyone would think you are 1. fat 2. Too big for that horse but more importantly have the nerve to PM just to tell you that's what they think

Pathetic.

A lot of it depends on how you ride though. I have seen 'thin' people banging about on horses, jabbing them in the mouth etc and have seen 'fat' riders well balanced, carrying their own weight and not restricting their horse. Which is worse? It's not just a simple question of numbers.

CM was IMO getting too big for Castle..i wouldn't say too heavy though as he is a chunky little fella..

she certainly looks great on Ali now though!!!

I weigh 15 stone and used to ride my Fjord with no problems until she retired. I have also been told I ride light and as I am a happy hacker (maybe a little canter deffo NO jumping) I don't see the problem. I now occasionally ride a 14.2 mw mare who again has no problems carrying me, if she did I would stop, but I'm sure if you saw me riding her you would be outraged.

Re the dipped back, my OH cousin actually thinks that's why old horses have dipped backs, 'because of all the fat birds that ride horses' eejit!

I am 5'4, 13 stone, and I ride a lightweight, 15.2 Arab X Selle Francais. Are you going to tell me I am too heavy for her?

PS. It is worth mentioning that not everyone is 'fat' because they eat too much. Some of us face a constant struggle to keep our weight down

and its worth mentioning that not everyone is heavy because they are overweight, some people of a certain height and build weigh more than others of the same...
When I was a size 10 at 24 yrs old I weighed 11 stone...most people assumed I was approx 9 stone..
My 12yr old daughter weighs 9 and a half already and she's a string bean...she rides a 36ins shettie, a standard shettie, a welsh a, a 13.1hh connie type plus others with no problems at all!!

What an irritating post....

starbucks...if you want to pick on someone then pick on me...i weigh over 16 stone and ride a pure bred dales who stands at 15 1HH..

he doesnt struggle, he naps, he rears and is generally a pig. I have asked numerous professional people about whether i am too heavy for him but the answer has always been the same...i ride perfectly well for him and he can carry my wieght...proof in the picture attached....

get a grip and butt out of other peoples lives and riding...i would prefer to see a fat person riding then a slim one riding wrong...

Although I'm classed as a 'skinny minnie' I agree that it is how you ride that is the issue not what you ride.
I've seen someone with really long legs on a 12.2 which did look rather comical but crikey they were a brilliant team!

Starbucks - I'm sure you are a nice girl but you seem to be obsessed with people who are larger than you riding horses that you think are too small for them and I know that you also worry about people hacking too slowly. You need to relax and live and let live. Unless someone is far too big for the horse or pony which they are riding - and, in my experience, this happens rarely - then just let them get on with things and let them go at their own pace too, even if it is a walk!

Reading your posts I feel that you are making yourself unhappy by worrying constantly about what other people are doing instead of just getting on with your own life.

I haven't read all the replies but it has to be said that not all people that are overweight are in that situation because they 'eat too much'

And I am not sure that the layman is always qualified to determine (by eye) if a person is actually too heavy for a horse.

I am afraid there is something about this post that is simplistic, insensitive, and, I agree, potentially 'fattist' as you call it.

I am not the smallest of people. I am trying to loose some more weight but that is easier said than done. And no it is not because I eat too much or the wrong things, I have a very healthy balanced diet. My horses are both cobs but I am looking to either breed a cob x ISH, or to but a ISH/ID x Tb about 16-16.2hh.
I regularly rode a 16.3hh pure TB and a 17hh 3/4 TB and I used to sometimes ride a 15.3hh pure enough TB. None of them struggled with me.
At my new job I will be riding everything from strapping big hunters to little tbs. I am sure they will let me know if I am too heavy.

At my riding club there is a lovely lady who is short but on the large side. She has a gorgeous cob that carries her no problems at all and they look perfect together. She rides beautifully scoring +80% in our last dressage test and winning it by miles.

Re: LindaW's post

Judging by the ears pricked forward and tail up I would say Most definately not! You both look like your having a high old time

Surely thats the point of riding? We do it because we love it

I just think its shallow people that have to put other people down to make themselves feel better, I would never dream of posting this, not that I think this way anyway! I agree with 'bigger' people having a better seat! Im not bad but when it comes to jumping im too light to keep a good position for my horse, im trying to put on weight ...... shock horror! Im 7 1/2 stone and i keep losing weight, i want some meat on me!

Castle-Mouse you looked fine on your horse!
Miz Elz-Why did i think Ellie was a tb x?!!

Having read both your posts in NL and SB you state that you hate to see fat people on horses that can't carry them. That I agree with BUT I do think you have a distorted view on what you see as fat. I am really surprised at you posting this in the tone that you have. Didn't you recently start a topic about how unhappy you are with your body. I wonder if you had a drink last night?. You think having 500 cals a day is healthy attitude to food. Jesus you are lucky that your metabolism and food issues didn't make you go the the other way and make you big. I have also read previous posts when you have been pissed and off your head on drugs ( your words ). Let me tell you I how I would rather be. I can't believe you actually PM someone and tell them they are too big their horse.
I am big and I have a 17hh ISH, I drive my trainer mad as I am always asking if I look too big on him or if he looks like he can't cope with me. She and others have said that I am balanced, and ride lightly. Oh and my trainer would tell me if I was too big. Likewise my saddler who has lent me a saddle whilst my other is being worked on. She has said its OK for my OH to use but not for me. Was I offended, no not in the slightest because she was offering sound advice.
Oh and I noticed you started another topic about looks and do I think you are ugly?. I think your words are ugly and I do actually pity you because I think you are deeply unhappy but hey as long you slim and eating 500 cals a day thats all that counts isn't it SB.

I think its all down to common sense really, the chunkier you are the chunkier an stronger your horse should be.
I don't see why the larger lady or gentleman should be denied the pleasure of riding/owning a horse providing the horse fits the bill with the correct confirmation.
However yes I do see what you mean, it does make me cringe when I've seen a larger person riding a horse with a smaller frame at shows etc

Ain't it sad to judge someone by their size? I choose my friends according to their personality. If I were going by size then I would lose 3 of my really good friends

500 calories a day

intresting, op has a bmi of 17 and uses 500 calories aday, now that to me is an eating disorder, which normally stems from physcological issues,.... on that basis i think she can be forgiven for being so BLOODY RUDE!

I have to say that this week looking through the forum there have been lots of debates about CC on how folk look and now this thread directed at proper women.

SB your are showing a very imature attitude that has caused quite a stir I presume that's what you intended to do.

However there are lots of very good larger riders who work hard and ride for pleasure and their horses are their world. Who are you to make a comment like you have and go out of your way to comment on someone like castle owner who by reading her threads had so much pleasure from her pony and was never too big for him.

I am 5,2 and 11 stone I ride my big fresian x and welshcob both do hunt and always have plenty of steam left in the tank at the end of the day

Get a grip girl its this sort of comment that wont do you any favours.

When I first saw this thread I thought we'd be talking about people who are too TALL for their horses!

Let's not forget too that muscle is heavier than fat, so very athletic people can be a lot heavier than they look.

There are a lot of sportsmen and women out there that might look great but if you went by their BMI (even more stupid than the height/weight ratio charts IMO) they'd be very overweight.

And somebody like Lennox Lewis would be classed as morbidly obese (but would anyone dare tell him that?!!).

How heavy are Arab blokes who ride Arabs? I'd have thought the average bloke wold be too heavy to ride an Arab pony, but they've been doing it for centuries, just like farmers riding native breeds in the UK.

(Can I also say that it works the other way too - tiny people on great big horses looks just as bad, in fact worse sometimes! In an ideal world, you should choose your horse to match yourself, like someone else said. Commonsense really!)

I had a eating problem from the age of 14, it wasnt because of any phobias of 'being fat', i just couldn't eat, the only time i would eat was at the weeknd when i worked at stables, they would bribe me that if i didn't eat i couldn't ride!

I obviously didnt read the OPs statistics but LISTEN UP LOVE....if your BMI is 17 then I suggest you get off to the Drs as you are certainly heading for anorexia on 500 c per day.

Your posts are offensive in the extreme by the way.
