Excuse the fluff (didn't bother reclipping after weather meant no more drag hunting!!) and the mud..and remembering he's had 2 months off hard work..I know what I think but opinions welcomed as I keep getting some people saying he's fat..others he's fine...and one he's light!!

From those photos, I think he's slightly on the heavy side but I would think that as soon as he's fit again he will tone up and look better. I certainly wouldn't put him on a strict diet but I would just be careful that he doesn't put any more weight on as we go into Spring. I know it can be really difficult with cobs to keep their weight in check - many of them only need to look at a blade of grass to put on about half a ton!

I am no expert but he doesn;t look fat to me. If ou are worried, you go to the world horse welfare website, they have a help page, where you can get the information on the proper way to fat score your horse. Its really easy from what i remember. Don;t pay too much attention to what others say, he was never built to be a skinny minny was he - very cute.
Maybe if you have the vet out sometime soon, ask them. Our local one is only too happy to give advice.

Oh he's the exception to the rule on cobs!! He's sugar intolerant and if fed anything other than his strict diet he scours and drops weight in an instant!! He's a nightmare to keep weight which no one expects for a cob!

IMO he is a touch porky but by no means obese, if he is hard to get weight on I wouldnt worry too much. If he was a typical cob I would be concerned about the weight going into spring with the risk of putting more on.

:o Thank you I loves him lots, he's a very naughty coblet and does go bounce alot but I enjoy him and we have great fun together. I'm struggling to get him back fit again, need this awful weather to bog off and get our fields back to riding condition!! He doesn't do indoor school and I can only get him really fit by field work. :(

Lol should have been! He's called Kane..which according to some is Irish for 'little battler'. I should have known, he came off the lorry aged 3 wild eyed and fighting and it's been a long battle since!! Had him 7 years now and found out he's blind in his left eye (which explains alot!) and I've had days of nearly giving up but as I have any animal for life he wasn't getting away from me that easily! Thanks to good friends, and vodka we've overcome most things and now can enjoy ourselves!!;)

Looks fine.

If he's well exercised and he feels fit and active and maintains the same weight on the same workload, then you have got it just right.

If he was clipped out, you'd be able see clearly what is muscle and what is fat, so could be that he make come across worse than what he really is to others that think he's over weight, certainly wouldn't want any more on him but if he has a sugar free diet anyway, then I wouldn't worry.

sorry to be lazy but exactly this - he is carrying a bit too much but so long as he does not get any porkier...

agree with some of the comments, if anything I would like to see him with a little more weight ( prob get shot down now!). also he will look 100 times better when he is back in work as he needs to regain his top line.

Having just looked at the photo's again I must admit I tend to agree with you.

I think the OP should send him to me to fatten up for her, and I might return him (or I might just steal him). I think he's fabulous.:D:D

Lol! Be careful what you wish for! He's a habit of dumping new riders, I think he thinks it's an intiaition(sp) right!! Most except a quiet gentle plod and he can turn on a six pence and loves nothing better than a flat out gallop over fields...with of course the skidding halt at the gate!!! I can read him like a book now and know when he's likely to go but he's had many a rider left wandering where the cob went!! Lol!!

Thank you for your kind comments, I'm used to him being ignored as the 'boring brown cob' on a yard of fancy TB point to pointers and show horses so it's nice to know I'm not the only one who appreciates his understated appeal. :D

This is him abit fitter!! Although to my eye fatter too!? First time out at the hunt..he LOVED it!!!:D This was just before the last line...he was still bouncing in the car park!!

To me he does look overweight here... :o

Ets... but still VERY handsome.

Thanks guys. It's interesting as his weight does go up and down quickly. Although I've just lost over 3 stone myself..12lb left to go;) , so I guess maybe I've been dieting him too without knowing!! I'm happy with his weight going into spring but will likely up the feed as the work increases. Just bought a new lorry a few weeks ago so hoping this spring and summer we'll be out alot and really hoping to do more drag hunting next season..if it doesn't snow!!!:(
