I have a very good doer of a pony. 11hh, hairy, fat. She had to be stabled for the winter due to floods and is now carrying to much condition. The field she is on is BARE. People are muttering things that sound suspiciously like neglect at the lack of grass but she's still fat. I don't know how she's managing it. Any ideas?

You have two options really, or both would be even better!

Restrict her grazing by either using a muzzle, stabling or reducing her turnout area.

Increase her exercise, tbh this is the best option.

Even though a field looks bare there will be plenty of new shoots of grass to eat.

agree with this exercise is the best way to keep the weight down.

Or if you can set up a track around the paddock, so the pony has to move about to find grass, with water at the far end if possible.

If she's still fat even with no grazing and carefully measured feed when kept in, I suggest speaking to your vet as it could be a metabolic issue.
